Star Trek Reboot: Directors Confirm "No Legacy Characters" And Tease A Much Darker Movie

The next Star Trek movie will take the franchise in a bold new direction, with directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein confirming a major change to the long-running sci-fi property.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein have been tapped to helm the next Star Trek movie. Paramount has finally given up on plans to continue the Chris Pine-led movies, meaning this next chapter will be another reboot.

Now, the duo has revealed more about their approach to the beloved sci-fi property, after previously confirming that the story will be set much further into the future than those revolving around icons like Kirk and Picard.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine (via SFFGazette.com), Goldstein and Daley explained that their Star Trek movie will feature "no legacy characters," meaning fans can forget about seeing any familiar faces show up aboard the next iteration of the Enterprise.

"No legacy characters, nobody that you’ve met before," Daley said. "A different time, not a different timeline per se, but it’s a little further in the future." Goldstein confirmed that it's "sort of a different timeline," prompting his co-director to point out, "Well, not the Kelvin timeline. It’s not the J.J. [Abrams] timeline."

This is obviously meant to serve as a fresh start for Star Trek, though how longtime fans respond to that remains to be seen. Paramount, however, is looking to find a new audience for the long-running sci-fi property, and that means appealing to more than just devoted Trekkies.

However, for anyone concerned that the filmmakers are planning a Star Trek comedy given their largely comedic background, both were quick to make it clear that's not the case.

"I would say it’s probably our darkest film that we’ve ever written. It’s not a comedy," Daley confirmed. "There is our sensibility in it, and we do find levity, but it’s in the characters who find humor in even the darkest moments, which is just true to real life."

"We both went on an aircraft carrier when we were researching Mayday, and it can be a very fraught landscape working on those ships, and people have to find levity. They have to find joy in even the most serious moments, and that’s the approach we have in this film."

Goldstein added, "You want it to be a fun watch. Doesn’t mean you’re laughing your head off. It just means you’re in it, and you’re enjoying it."

This reboot is in the works at a time when fans are both eager and nervous about Star Trek. Paramount, which is in the midst of a massive acquisition of Warner Bros., is run by the Ellison family, who are longtime supporters of President Donald Trump and what many consider right-wing or far-right politics.

For longtime fans, diversity and inclusion have been central themes of Star Trek as far back as The Original Series in the 1960s. Thus far, there's nothing to suggest that won't continue to be the case.

Daley and Goldstein's untitled Star Trek movie doesn't currently have a confirmed release date, so stay tuned for updates as we have them.

About time Star Trek moved on to be honest. Much of the writing in Trek properties over the last 50yrs has focused on either TOS/Kirk era or TNG/Picard Era. Fair enough, Discovery tried jumping 1000yrs ahead but that didn't really work for various reasons and they still had to bring in Spock and other references. Time for something totally new.

Good. One of the many problems of nuTrek are all the forced and cringy memberberries

Yes for moving ahead (and forgetting about the cringe that was Discovery timeline).

No for dark Star Trek... It's like missing the point of Star Trek.

At this point I just want a Culture movie instead.

@gonzor - So, the whole Roddenberry concept of Star Trek as a beacon of a more evolved and enlightened society is great and I fully believe they should keep that as a 'prime directive' but I think Star Trek is more effective when it lives in a world that is more complex and nuanced and that they must encounter and figure out how to deal with situations that aren't all rainbows and butterflies. DS9 was always my favorite series for exactly this reason. Even TOS had plenty of dark themes. It just felt a little lighter because of, literally, bright soundstage lighting, over exaggerated theatrical acting and an occasional hint of 60s camp with story lines that were neatly wrapped up in just under an hour. Capturing that in modern story telling with today's audience is a significant challenge.

@gonzor - They said it's the darkest movie they've done (they're known for Game Night, the Chris Pine D+D movie, the recent Vacation Movies, Minecraft and Horrible Bosses) not the darkest Star Trek movie. It'll probably be one of the lightest Star Trek movies.

@JoshWilding I dont understand and never will how all of Hollywood can be this liberal haven and no one is jumping and screaming about it, but when 1 studio (who happens to be owned by a right winger) buys a failing studio its like mass chaos. So odd... Not to get tooooooooo political but nothing in Star Trek was ever about DEI!!! People made that argument just to add a backbone to something they couldnt argue. Its a story about space exploration. There are different species. No political undertones. Just explore.
Its a science show.
ugh.

@AgentofSH1ELD - Nobody called it DEI back then but Roddenberry intentionally had a multi ethnic crew when he started the show. Although she did not have a huge role , Uhura was a scientifically knowledgeable character in the command lineup back when black actresses on TV were almost always just the help. He had a woman second in command in the first pilot but NBC pushed back hard on that. Clearly you don’t know Star Trek or you are trying to rewrite history.

@RolandD - lol. and there is the problem. People are people. It doesnt need a label. Just let people be people. Explore space without pushing gay aliens down my throat.
Clearly you didnt understand my comment or you are trying to be a jackoff.

@RolandD - you are very talented at not minding your own business also. Im sorry that you lib tards failed and pushing DEI into everything. Just let things be how about that? Quick secret-- no one cares about DEI until you tell them they have to care. Its really simple. People will just be people and accept things until you try and make them.

Their comments sound good imo for the most part…

I have enjoyed Daley & Goldstein’s prior work with Game Night , D&D:Honor Among Thieves and Mayday but they have been relatively lighthearted in nature so I hope with this being the “darkest” thing they have written but still having levity to it that they can manage that tonal balance well as they have with their other films.

Also they have said recently that their Star Trek film is inspired by the likes of Training Day & Crimson Tide since it unfolds in almost real time like the latter and will deal with institutional corruption due to certain “bad apples” in the organization which is honestly really interesting imo so I hope it happens since I would love to see it!!.

This is exactly the same kind of fresh air The Next Generation brought to the franchise, so I'm here for it!

Also, Honor Among Thieves was stellar and if the kove for the source material carries over to Star Trek, I think everything is in good hands.

@TheWinkler - exactly. People forget that this happened before. And will happen again.
