Turns Out George Takei Is Not On Board With STAR TREK BEYOND's Take On Sulu Being Gay

If anyone was going to endorse the decision to make John Cho's Kelvin Timeline Sulu gay in Star Trek Beyond it's the man who played the original character, George Takei... right? Umm, not so much...

Earlier today, John Cho revealed that his take on Ensign Hikaru Sulu was actually gay in the rebooted "Kelvin" timeline, and would have a daughter with a same-sex partner in Star Trek Beyond. Most people seemed to think this was a good idea, as it paid homage to original Sulu actor George Takei, who came out back in 2005 after many years of keeping his sexuality a secret - but as it turns out, Takei himself has taken issue with the decision.

"I’m delighted that there’s a gay character," he told The Hollywood Reporter during their interview. "Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate."

LGBT activist though he may be, it seems Mr. Takei is also something of a purist, and feels a new gay character should have been created for the movie in order to preserve Gene Roddenberry's original vision of Sulu.
