A New Name Surfaces In STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII's Search For Female Lead

Who will join Daisy Ridley as another kick-ass female character in the Star Wars franchise? Several names were bandied about in 2015 and there was even a report that Gugu Mbatha-Raw had secured the role. However a new, up-and-coming actress has been added to the mix.

A new rumor purports that Bel Powley, breakout actress from last year’s excellent Diary Of A Teenage Girl is the latest potential new cast addition for Star Wars: Episode VIII.  Hosted by The Wrap's Jeff Sneider, it should be noted that anything the film reporter reveals on Meet The Movie Press instead of his official platform at The Wrap should be considered a RUMOR.  It should be noted that Sneider isn't actually sure if Powley is in the mix for the same role that Mbatha-Raw was rumored to have secured or if she's being considered for a different character altogether.

Other actresses previously rumored to be in contention are Tatiana Maslany, Olivia Cooke, and Gina Rodriguez.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently scheduled for release in North American theaters on May 24, 2019.  Rian Johnson takes over for J.J. Abrams.

Another female lead? I thought the Fin, Poe, and Rey were supposed to be the main heroes of this new trilogy.

Its good and refreshing to see them casting another young actress in a Star Wars saga movie. Two female lead in a SW movie? Better make it happen. Hope that she wont be just playing the exact same role as someone from Episode 5 (example Lando).

Great, more characters for them to poorly develop. Its not bad enough that that Finn, Dameron Poe, and Kylo Ren were half-done, not we're adding a new protagonist to mess up.

I would agree. I think that it's pretty balanced for now with the "Young Three". A new female lead (if done right and not diluted) could bring more to the table though.

And there better be some more of Tr-8R coming. Both in film and figures. I don't really collect figures, but I do re-sell them and TR-8R getting a 6" black series treatment would be like merging the combined sales of Phasma, Kylo Ren and Rey just before Christmas.

There is an Amazon 7 piece 3.75 'riot control' trooper and 6" Target BS version with Poe, but no 'TR-8R' designation. To be honest... I don't know if the world is ready.

With good writing, making a good movie with four main good guy characters is possible. Example Avengers, X-men DOFP, Ocean Eleven. Its just a matter of how you use them.
