Ava DuVernay seemed tailor made to be welcomed into the fold of
LucasFilm and
Star Wars. She is well situated within the Disney family, having just directed
A Wrinkle In Time. She already gave advice to JJ Abrams during post-production on
The Force Awakens, which led to a slight alteration in the final fight between Rey and Kylo Ren in that film. And when it was revealed that original director Colin Trevorrow was fired from
Episode IX, many vocalized their desire to see her take up directorial duties.
It turns out that this isn't the case. Replying to a fan on twitter who praised DuVernay's
A Wrinkle In Time and posited that everything on show in that film proved that the
Selma director was up to task, DuVernay, however, expressed her disinterest:
This isn't the first time that DuVernay has taken herself out of the running on a big budget franchise film. She at one point turned down the offer to direct
Black Panther stating that she felt that she couldn't make "
an Ava DuVernay film" and the job went to
CREED's Ryan Coogler with great success.
It's a fair reason for a director to give, and considering how LucasFilm keeps butting heads with its directors, it's probably a wise choice that DuVernay won't enter that fray.
