BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: TFA Remains #1 In The US; Tops JURASSIC WORLD Globally

It looks like analysts spoke too soon yesterday when they predicted that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be knocked from the #1 spot by The Revenant, and after yet another incredible global haul, the movie has now passed Jurassic World. Next? Titanic...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has had another huge weekend, beating The Revenant with an impressive $41.6 million compared to that movie's $38 million (which is still an incredible result for the Alejandro González Iñárritu helmed release). The Return of the Jedi follow-up became the first movie in history to cross $800 million in North America yesterday, while a record breaking $52.6 million two day haul in China is pointing to The Force Awakens doing big business in the Middle Kingdom. Taking all of this into account, this latest Star Wars movie earned a whopping $145.93 million this weekend, and that means it has now sailed past the record held by Jurassic World to become the third highest grossing release of all-time. With a worldwide cume of $1.73 billion, there's still a little way to go until Star Wars: The Force Awakens tops Titanic's $2.18 billion, but it could very well happen. We're just going to have to wait and see how the next few weeks pan out!

Who was the dumb f*cker that thought this wouldn't even pass Jurassic World (or would only gross 200 mill more than that film?)

It was on another thread. I can't remember who they were.

Great achievement for TFA but it will not catch Avatar, even i doubt it will catch Titanic globally.

Yea, Star Wars is ruling the industry. And Disney, the world. I got no problems.

Dear Disney: Slow down construction on AVATARLAND and start the digging on your new STAR WARS LANDS in CA and FL *now*.

In all seriousness though, it's funny all this talk about taking down AVATAR when Disney and James Cameron are buddies right now (but perhaps they were closer before Disney acquired Marvel and Lucasfilm).

I love Marvel and Star Wars, but I'm concerned about the face-off between GOTG2 and STAR WARS 8 next year. Two space adventures from the same company just 3 weeks apart seems kind of risky for both franchises.

I don't doubt it can beat Avatar with two or more months.

As long as it doesn't beat Avatar, I'll be happy. If it does that means hollywood will never do anything other than shove the same garbage down our throats over and over again.

TFA is still pulling $100M+ weekly. Even if it were to drop precipitously to AVATAR's week 5 - 10 numbers (about $45M weekly average), the movie would cross $1B domestically in about a month and a half. It's mindblowing that such a figure is even a small possibility.

The Revenant is still the better film...

Huh didn't realize it but yeah, GOTG2 and Star Wars 8 are way to close to each other. They shouldn't be sharing the same month, not a smart move on Disney's part. I know they'll want to keep Star Wars in May (that's the month the originals and prequels came out) so it might be a good idea to push GOTG2 to August, same month as the first film where so far its only competition (and by that I mean movies that will only take a small chunk of box office) that month is Pitch Perfect 3 and MAYBE the Emoji Movie.

Repeat business is surely a factor with STAR WARS, more than it is even with the best comic book movies. Heck, I saw TFA 4 times without even really meaning to (just took a person who hadn't seen it each time) -- think about how many people are re-watching it on purpose, because "it's not every year you have a STAR WARS movie in theaters" (a common sentiment I've heard standing in line))

Wowza, glad both movies are doing good though. Can't wait to watch The Revenant.

I just saw this movie yesterday and it was great. The acclaim it gets is very much deserves. The one thing I don't like is movie-goers talking during the movie. One guy behind me just kept talking and talking about what he thought was gonna happen. It took me a lot of effort to ignore him. Either way, Star Wars FTW!

@JamesMann

Yup, and GOTG2 and SW8 are both "middle" movies in a trilogy -- probably going to have darker, cliffhanger-ish storylines. Not an ideal pairing of summr flicks. But if they do move one, I'd bank on GOTG, since, as you pointed out, the first did well in August.
