Daisy Ridley Shares Excitement For Rey Return; Says New STAR WARS Movie Is "Not What I Expected"

Daisy Ridley has spoken about reprising the role of Rey in a new Star Wars movie from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for the first time since Celebration, and she thinks people should be "very excited."

Rumors had been doing the rounds for quite a while that Daisy Ridley might be in talks to return as Star Wars sequel trilogy lead, Rey, for a future project set in the galaxy far, far away, and the news was finally confirmed during Star Wars Celebration London back in April.

Ridley will reprise her role as Rey "Skywalker" for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movie, which will be set a whole fifteen years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but we do know that Rey will be a "powerful Jedi master" running her own training academy when we catch up with her.

Now, Ridley has addressed her return as the powerful Force-wielder for the first time since Celebration during an interview with Collider.

"I was shitting myself before I went on stage, because no one knew I was going to that," she said of her surprise appearance at the Celebration panel. "No one knew I was going to Celebration, bar like Kathy [Kennedy] and there were a couple of people. I was so nervous. Oh my God. It was such a wonderful reception. I'm very excited. The story is really cool. I'm waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don't have any other updates. It's not what I expected, but I'm very excited."

Ridley remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, but she did reveal that she believes the untitled film ("Star Wars: A New Beginning" has been rumored) will be the next big-screen Star Wars project to enter production.

"I know the storyline for one film. That's not to say that that's all it is, but that's what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don't know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited."

In a separate interview with THR, Ridley spoke about being pitched the idea over breakfast. She also notes that she hasn't actually read the script yet, but does know the story.

"I had a breakfast with Kathy [Kennedy] that I thought was just breakfast. (Laughs.) And then it was mentioned, so I thought about it. I loved the story, and I was like, “Okay.” Things then happened quite quickly, and it felt like I was instantaneously on a stage being introduced by [director] Sharmeen [Obaid-Chinoy]. It honestly took me back to being 20 or 21, however old I was, when [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] was announced. I was petrified, I was overwhelmed, I was really nervous but the response was really wonderful. And I’m genuinely really excited about the next one. I haven’t read anything, but I know the story. It’s really worth telling, worth exploring, and I think people will be excited."

I guess they need something to make The Marvels look good in comparison to...

I'm sure it will be a success, she has gained a huge fan approval since the sequel trilogy + Star Wars is bigger than ever among general population. Right?

You can't build a continuing continuity on-top of multiple failed films and series in a row.

Why can't I believe a single word from this?

Filoni's new role over at Lucasfilm is exciting, but I'm not sure there's much interest in this or the Filoniverse movie. The Mangold one maybe.

@WakandanQueen - is Mangold's movie still happening, after Dial of Destiny fiasco?

@WakandanQueen - I wonder if, after the Marvels, they might be rethinking the Filoniverse movie(s). I think the main takeaway from the Marvels failure at the box office is that you can't get that many people out to see TV characters in a movie, which, if you think about it, is actually kind of a no brainer.

Unless they're legit bringing in the OT3 (recast, ideally) it doesn't have a shot of making its money back.

Besides Andor S2, there is absolutely nothing Star Wars related that sounds remotely interesting.

@MotherGooseUPus - I’m not against Ashoka. Haven’t seen it and probably won’t. All the cartoon continuity is too much for me to keep up with. This stuff requires too many viewing hours these days.
MotherGooseUPus

@mountainman - SW Rebels was a fantastic show, i watched it when it came out, havent had the time to "rewatch" it, so i totally understand. If you liked Rebels, then AShoka was basically S5 of Rebels, so i really enjoyed it

mountainman - 11/22/2023, 10:25 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - I have watched a handful of clone wars episodes that were recommended to me. It was always too kiddie for my taste. Same with rebels. I just have a hard time watching kids cartoons these days.

People excited? Nah not after the last trilogy and the Disney Plus shows.

This is all the Star Wars I need.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi
Star Wars:Rogue One
The Mandalorion Season 1
The Mandalorion Season 2

They could have properly wrapped up the Skywalker saga. Then started a new set of films with Rey as the new Disney princess who actually had proper character development and everythi8ng would have been fine.

Has she been in anything else since she did her star wars trilogy?

@SteelGunZ - She's been in four live action features since 2019, plus a couple of voice roles, and has three more features in production.

Here's hoping they learn their lessons from the last trilogy and give us an arc for Rey that feels earned, rather than blessed. I like Rey as a character, and Daisy Ridley as and actor, so I'm keeping an open mind.

clintthahamster - 11/22/2023, 9:11 AM
@RedFury - I still don't get why it was so easy to buy a whiney farm kid as as being just kind of naturally good at Jedi shit, but not a self-assured junk scavenger.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/22/2023, 9:22 AM
@ClintThaHamster - I kinda figured she was just good at Jedi shit because of her dyad connection to Ben. As he rose in power, so did she (i.e. balance in the force).

Think they could really make an interesting arc with that, especially now that Ben died (raising the question whether she lost her Jedi powers too)
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 11/22/2023, 9:28 AM
@bkmeijer1 - That's a cool way of looking at it!
