Some fans rightly assumed that "Old Master" would turn out to be Darth Maul, and now it's been confirmed. The well-loved character survived being cut in half in The Phatom Menace and being driven mad after his ordeals in The Clone Wars, and now he's back to seek vengeance.

Producer Dave Filoni spoke to EW about the decision to bring Maul back at this time.

The genesis of this idea is actually kind of an interesting one. I had pointed out several times in story meetings that we have an opportunity – if we wanted to – to actually have Darth Vader fight Darth Maul. That was something that [co-producer] Simon Kinberg and I were like, ‘Oooh…’ Then there was the opponent in the story meetings who would say, ‘Well, that’s fan service,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah – exactly.’ [Laughs] I don’t see the problem with that, but you know we were very careful that we don’t just do things because they’re cool. We want to do things that are story driven."

The season two finale of Star Wars: Rebels airs March 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Disney XD.

I love how they're doing some really cool character building stuff with Darth Maul. He deserved more than Lucas gave him.

Can't wait to see Ahsoka vs Vader. I wonder if she'll die.

My favourite character of the show hands down. Ahsoka is a BOSS.

@AsapXXX - I still like her, but I've felt a little disconnected from her in this series. Most of the time when she's around, the story isn't told from her perspective the way it is for the main crew.

Maul was amazing, but maybe part of that was because we saw so little of him? Kind of like Boba Fett.

For those thinking Maul being back in Clone Wars and Rebels makes up for what George did to him, keep in mind that George Lucas was an Executive Producer on Clone Wars so it was his idea to bring Darth Maul back from the dead.
