Director Rian Johnson Compares STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI To The Rest Of The Franchise

While attending the D23 Expo, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, was asked how he would compare his film to the rest of the movies in the Star Wars franchise. Check out what he had to say!

When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released in 2015, it drew record numbers and charmed fans around the world. One of the criticisms of the film, however, was that it followed too close to the formula that made A New Hope successful.

With The Last Jedi being released later this year, and it being the second film in a new trilogy, it would only be natural that people compare it to The Empire Strikes Back. A comparison that is not lost on The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, who is hoping to put his own unique spin on the film.

Speaking to Fandango at D23, Johnson was asked how he would compare his Star Wars film to the rest of the Saga. "The temptation is to say, well it's a middle chapter, so it's got kind of an Empire thing," Johnson explained. "But at the same time, I really wanted to maintain the same sense of fun that J.J. [Abrams] had in The Force Awakens, that to some extent in Return Of The Jedi, which I was like 10 years old, that was primed for me when that came out, and the sense of playfulness, I think. So when I say Empire, I guess I don't want to give the impression that it's kind of a dark, gloom and doom. It was also very important to me that this was a fun adventure. I don't know, it's a mixed bag of a lot of different stuff. And hopefully some unique stuff too.

Check out the video below, and catch Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters December 15, 2017.

Good. Make it your own thing, while keeping it in the universe. I have faith in Rian to deliver a good movie. Colin Trevorrow on the other hand...

I'm getting very good vibes regarding the "uniqueness" of this movie. From Hamil saying he didn't agree with the script to the reports that it will be "different" and "unexpected", it all sounds great to me.

@ODanil - see thats what worries me. I don't want a rehash of Empire but when the guy who literally IS Luke Skywalker says he didn't agree with where this took the character at first...I get concerned.

@Super12 - Basically been clarified by Mark that what he was talking about was how Luke ran and went into hiding as opposed to being the classical hero and charging in to fight the good fight.

All i'm sayin is that I better see some force ghosts in this movie. Conversations between Yoda, Obi Wan, Anakin and Luke would be great in my opinion.

Great! As much as I enjoyed The Force Awakens, I was really worried because with the crew being split up, Rey training with Luke and diving deeper into Kylo Ren, this was easily set up to be an Empire remake in the same way that one retread Star Wars.

I'm very relieved to hear it seems to be very original.

My only complaint is that we don't get enough major alien characters. Maybe there's a new one we haven't seen yet. But Star Wars had Chewie, Empire had Yoda, Jedi had Jabba (and ewoks).

The Force Awakens had Maz who was cool, but barely used. And Rogue One didn't have a single alien in the main cast! I had hoped Benicio del Toro might be an alien character, especially with prosthetics to differentiate him from The Collector.
Oh well. Maybe Snoke's real reveal will be mind blowing.

Not seen any of his previous films, but the guy's humbleness and passion gives me complete confidence this will be something different yet special...
