It has today been confirmed by Disney and Lucasfilm that they have started production on a new Star Wars animated series which will launch on the Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD in Fall 2014. While many fans were left upset at the abrupt decision to cancel Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this new project should keep the majority happy as it will fill in the gap between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. According to a press release, "'Star Wars Rebels' takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape." Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) will write the first episode and is joined by producers Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man. That's all we know for now as the release adds that, "Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point." The full press release and announcement video is below.

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."

"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe," said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. "I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.

@MrMartinMarvel There are about 24 years between 3 and 4 I believe, so it's possible that this takes place after Starkiller brings them together.

Which I wonder, if we'll see an appearance from Starkiller in this series.

You would think they would build up to Episode VII by showing what happened after Return of the Jedi using Mark, Carrie, Harrison, and Tony. I want to see what happened between Episode VI and Episode VII.

So is Galen Marik not canon? I thought they said he was? Well, the games werent that good anyway so retconning those stories isnt a bad idea

To whoever said they believe there is a 24 year gap, it's a 19 year gap between 3 & 4.

I will be interesting if they have Maul go against Kenobi one last time on as like the comic.

@GameboyColor 19 years is still a lot. I thought I remember hearing it was 24, but 19 makes more sense.

I hope THE CLONE WARS voice cast returns. Yeah, many will likely have to play different characters, but Obi-Wan would still be around, as would Asohka and Yoda.

Is it possible Obi-Wan occasionally left Tatooine to go on some covert missions, under his new name, Ben?

If it's anything like the Clone Wars show, I'll give it a try.

Oh, and I do hope they lose Tom Kane's newsreel voice intro narration, perhaps the only aspect of THE CLONE WARS which truly annoyed me.

hopefully the animation is not like clone wars, but more like the old republic mini movies.

Was kinda disappointed its not post-ROTJ but... This could be inspired awesome! Imagine the X-Wing books by Michael Stackpole but set during the height of the rebellion!

Plus, they could still do the post-Jedi series after EPVII hits. Hmmm

NoAssemblyReqd: I doubt it. Well, I can be wrong, but I've never heard of him in most stories revolving around that 19-year gap. And it's just logical, since he's truly exiling himself while the remaining Jedi are killed, even the "hidden" ones.
