On March 12th 2015, Bob Iger (chairman and CEO over at the House of Mouse) announced in a shareholders meeting new info on Star Wars VIII and the first spin-off film. This info not only contained major players in the crew, but also a major player in the cast as well and some concept art that wasn't revealed to the public. People flipped their dung about Rian Johnson officially directing and writing Episode VIII, but I feel like theo ther big news is the most important. The title of the first Star Wars spin off film is Rogue One. I mean it's just a title, but how much can we learn from just a title? Let's see, shall we?

With the word "rogue" in the title one could only assume it was related to previous Star Wars legends of the same name right? Well no that's wrong, but that doesn't mean that it's not smart to look there. A lot of people have looked there so I am too! Now what is "Rogue Squadron" is a question you might be asking and because of that I'm going to tell you. According to the incredibly (kinda) accurate SW databse Wookipedia, Rogue Squadron is was an elite Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron founded by Commander Arhul Narra, Luke Skywalker, and Wedge Antilles shortly after the Battle of Yavin out of Red Squadron. The squad was composed of the Rebel Alliances 12 best pilots. Panties, pilots, and planes would drop at their presence. That's just a cool way of saying that they almost were mythical, and that sometimes enemies would surrender before one shot was even fired. Can a ninja get "Badaaaaaasssssss"?.....no.....okay moving on!
So what would we get out of an R-Squad (that's their new name) movie? Well A LOT of classic OG Trilogy type battles in the skies (or space I guess) with lasers flying everywhere and pilots maneuvering through the chaotic battles and overused astromech droid sounds. Remember everything that we've known about the Rogue Squadron outside of the new canon has been erased and they can do whatever they want with the Squad. So maybe it's called Rogue ONE because this is the story of the first Rogue Squadron. Maybe Rogue One is the name of a new R-Squad, established after the events of Episode VI and before VII. Could this be the group of X-Wing fighters that Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron could be a part of????? Such questions. Very speculation. Much wow.

Felicity Jones everybody. Can we just spend a moment looking at that picture? Hot damn. Moving on, Felicity Jones has been officially confirmed as having a role in Rogue One. Non confirmed reports that came out much before Bob Iger adressed the casting said that she was in a lead role. That has not yet be confirmed, but if they were right about the casting they were probably right about the main role as well. If so, maybe this is the name of her character, or another character. Rogue One could be the name of a Squadron, but it could very well be the name of one of the Squad members. Rogue One, Rogue Two, etc. Or the Rogue doesn't have to do with the Rogue Squadron at all.
Let's think about the word "rogue" for a second. It can mean a variety of things. For example:
ROGUE AS A VERB (without an object): to live or act as a rogue.
|
ROGUE AS AN ADJECTIVE: no longer obedient, belonging, or accepted and hence not controllable or answerable; deviating, renegade:
|
ROGUE AS A VERB (with an object): to uproot or destroy (plants, etc., that do not conform to a desired standard).
|
ROGUE AS A NOUN: a dishonest, knavish person; scoundrel. |
Now look at all of those definitions of "rogue" in it's various parts of speech. If you were labeled the word, whoever called you that must not think to fondley of you. Someone is calling our main character "Rogue one" or maybe even "The rogue one". If our main character is a rogue, or is roguing, what are they rebelling against? Who are they being dishonest to? What are they uprooting / destroying? Could it possibly be the Empire? In Star Wars VII, one theory and rumor running rampant around the interwebs is that John Boyega's Finn character is a Stormtrooper that rebels and gives up on the job. This film could tell the story of the first Stormtrooper rebel against the Empire (inbetween Episodes III and IV?), possibly even to the aid of a Jedi being hunted under Order 66. The officers in charge of her refer to her as "Rogue One" or maybe even "The rogue one" and are hunting her throughout the film so that she can't give the newly formed Rebel Alliance secret information on the Empire.
If not someone's name then maybe, multiple people's name. What do I mean? Well...

The ongoing rumor was that Gareth Edwards' Star Wars film would be about the bounty hunters that stole the plans for the first Death Star (not the Bothans). This isn't entirely ruled out. When the rumors about Felicity Jones came out they did line up with the bounty hunter rumors, so maybe the scoops weren't wrong. The group would be made up of people that will do anything for the highest bidder, and it's not totally uncharacteristic of them to call themselves rogues. Rogue One could be the name of their group. Seeing as the Empire is in charge of the galaxy, anyone going against their authority would be rogues in their eyes. Whether they're doing it for the rebels, or for the rebels money, they'd still be rogues to the Empire. The Rogue Squadron theory does make a lot of sense though too. Possibly more sense. So do they play in to this? Wel they could. How?

THE BOUNTY HUNERS TEAM UP WITH R-SQUAD:
Stealing the plans to the Death Star probably isn't a very easy task. Who says that stealing the plans to a super planet destroying weapon is a task made for a rag tag group of mercenaries? Maybe they'll need some backup in the final battle or even throughout the entire movie. The bounty hunters (hired by the rebels) have a couple rebels ridng in X-Wings helping them out throughout the mission. The rebels should'nt really trust those bounty hunters, so one condtion they had was that some Rebel pilots accompanied them.
|
FROM BOUNTY HUNTERS TO R-SQUAD:
Instead of having the group of mercenaries team up with rebels, what if they became Rebels. Felicity Jones' character is most likely the star of the film. What if her character starts the movie off as a bounty hunter, but ends it off as a rebel fighter pilot. The Star Wars movies are no stranger to starring a very talented young pilot, what if we stick with tradition. Her and some other bounty hunters realize that not only they work well together, but that the Empire is in the wrong and that they should join the rebels. These bounty hunters, in affect, become the first Rogue Squadron

Am I looking in to this way too much? Should we just wait and see? Am I asking too many questions? Thanks again, and remember to press that big red thumb in the bottom right hand corner. See you next time, and kids....
