J.J. Abrams Talks STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS; Plus New BTS Still

In an excerpt from his interview with Vanity Fair, J.J. Abrams discusses the ways in which his new Star Wars movie will reference the events of the original films, & hint at what's occurred in the 30-years since Return Of The Jedi. We also have a new BTS image of Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata...

We still haven't seen the alien character that Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years A Slave) will play in Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- unless you count that brief glimpse of her handing over the lightsaber in the latest trailer -- but thanks to Vanity Fair's recent coverage of the movie, we now know her name and profession at least: Maz Kanata, space pirate.

Below we have a new behind-the-scenes snap of Nyong'o performing a mo-cap scene as Maz, along with a new excerpt from J.J. Abrams' interview with the mag. The director reveals that his film will recall certain things from the earlier instalments in the saga, but suggests that they also held back on including some stuff that could have seemed forced.

"We've obviously had a lot of time [during the development process] to talk about what’s happened outside of the borders of the story that you’re seeing. So there are, of course, references to things, and some are very oblique so that hopefully the audience can infer what the characters are referring to. We used to have more references to things that we pulled out because they almost felt like they were trying too hard to allude to something. I think that the key is—and whether we’ve accomplished that or not is, of course, up to the audience—but the key is that references be essential so that you don’t reference a lot of things that feel like, oh, we’re laying pipe for, you know, an animated series or further movies. It should feel like things are being referenced for a reason."

 Starring original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker and franchise newcomers, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, Star Wars Episode VII is set to be released on December 18th, 2015.

The most overrated actress. She's good but not as great as people say.

Shame Lupita is providing capture, but she was a very exciting addition. She's my choice for Vixen.

Anyways, J.J. gets it and what he explains is one of my slight problems with Jurassic World. Can't wait for this shit

@Gunslinger I was hoping the same thing. Still holding on to the chance that Maz Kanata might be a disguise!

C'mon, guys. At least she won't be Jar Jar. I mean, I like him despite the fact that all u guys don't which I get, but there are some favorite characters of mine from the PT that are CGI like Dexter Jettster and the wookiee, Tarrful, even though he isn't CGI. But, at least for you PT haters, JJ will have Jar Jar's bones scorched on the planet Jakku (which I partly think is Tatooine under a JJ smokescreen).

I've only seen her in 12 Years but she was good enough in that to make me want to watch pretty much anything else she has lined up.

@cjqnsnyc Large body of work? Really? She has only been in 4 things, and yes I've seen it all. Overrated is used a lot but I rarely use it. Lupita was good in 12 Years a Slave but nothing about her acting stood out. The Academy did what they did best when a heavily controversial movie comes out, they give out the awards like candy.

A lot of people don't like that I used the word "overrated", the thing is that everyone is saying she's great only after seeing her do one thing. She hasn't shown much of her acting ability other than in 12 Years, and even then she was barely in the movie.

@soberchimera

I know, but Storm is Black Panther's wife in the comics

Marvel worked out the Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch deal because they were Avengers, so maybe they could work out a Storm deal because she is a major character in the Black Panther comics
soberchimera
soberchimera - 5/5/2015, 5:51 PM
@DrKinsolving Quicksilver was a last minute addition to X-Men: Days of Future Past AFTER Marvel announced they were using him in their film, and they wound up killing him anyway. I doubt Marvel is willing to share another character, but hey I could be wrong.
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 5/5/2015, 5:57 PM
@soberchimera

Oh, I know, but Marvel is still using Scarlett Witch, she's gonna be in other films, so it's a similar situation with Storm....

It's definitely a possibility, and Marvel's Storm in Black Panther could be way different, because Fox just cast a teen Storm

Marvel's Storm would be a goddess
