RESULTS: Find Out Which STAR WARS Movie You Chose As The Franchise's Best (And Worst)

The Star Wars franchise is a global phenomenon, inspiring an entire generation of filmmakers and forever changing the landscape of sci-fi storytelling.

Beginning in 1977 with George Lucas' Star Wars, the story continued with The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and concluded with 1983's Return of the Jedi. Sixteen years later, the filmmaker returned to this Galaxy Far, Far Away for 1999's The Phantom Menace, with Attack of the Clones following in 2002 before the story wrapped up in Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

That was it from Lucas and, in 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm and set out to make a new sequel trilogy...minus his input. The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019) continue to create dissension among fans, though spin-offs Rogue One and Solo fared at least a little better.

Earlier this month, we asked you to cast your votes and decide which of these movies you think is the best one.

Thousands of you chimed in and the results make for very interesting reading. In first place is The Empire Strikes Back
with a massive 50.43% of the vote. The clear winner, it was followed by Revenge of the Sith with 10.75%, though Rogue One was nipping at the prequel's heels with an impressive 10.23%.

A New Hope was in fourth place with 8.95%, while Return of the Jedi rounded out the top five with 8.75%.

The most popular sequel was The Last Jedi (5.12%), though we were shocked to see The Rise of Skywalker (1.56%) top The Force Awakens (1.52%).

From there, we have Attack of the Clones (0.83%), The Phantom Menace (0.76%), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (0.59%) and, most surprisingly, Solo: A Star Wars Story (0.52%). Clearly, not many of you are part of that #MakeSolo2Happen movement!

These results are undeniably fascinating and offer a much better idea of how this franchise is currently viewed by you, SFFGazette.com's readers.

Do you agree that The Empire Strikes Back is as good as it gets for Star Wars

The Last Jedi is the worst, because it tanked an entire trilogy, Rian Johnson has absolutely no clue 1. How The Force actually works and 2. How Lightspeed works and 3. Thinks writing Holdo the way he did made her a STRONG WOMAN LEADER without understanding anything of what makes a good military leader and 4. LEIA POPPINS, and because SUBVERTING EXPECTATIONS was 100% the wrong thing to do in a movie with Luke Skywalker. I'm sorry... Jake Skywalker.

Frak Rian Johnson and frak Kathleen Kennedy for the destruction of Star Wars.

@HistoryofMatt - It absolutely did not. It took some very big risks and parts of it didn't work (like the casino planet subplot for instance, Finn was wasted in that movie) but it set up A LOT of really interesting possibilities for Episode 9 that were all absolutely wasted in favour of damage control and unearned fan-service. Episode 9 is the one that tanked the trilogy, if it has stuck the landing I think people would look back a lot more fondly on TLJ.

Was it ever gonna be a contest?

Anyway, it's a top 5 I can agree with. I'd put Attack of the Clones much higher though. That Obi-Wan detective plot is still one of my favorite arcs in the whole saga.

Surprised to see TROS top TFA too though. TFA is one of the best story structure-wise in the saga imo (probably because it copied the best structured one: ANH).

@bkmeijer1 - same here about attack of the clones, loved that film.

@bkmeijer1 - the issue with TFA is it commits some of the biggest no no you can do In a long running franchise. TROS on the other hand is just another bad SW movie, we have a couple of those already so it’s no as big of a deal.

Nobody really chose what movie is worst if you can only vote for the one you liked the most. Just because Solo got the least favorite movie votes doesn't mean its the most despised.

@ElvenKingSlayer - Excellent point. Theoretically it could have been the second most favorite of all except for those who voted for it as their favorite. Not bloody likely, but yeah.

Of the prequels I like Revenge of the Sith most but I don't think it should be ranked above any of the original trilogy so I'm kinda surprised it's above both ANH and ROTJ here.

@AC1 - I'm not all that surprised. From what I gather RotS is a hugely popular movie online (no thanks to the memes either)
