Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is returning to theatres later this month for a limited IMAX run ahead of September's Andor premiere, and the re-release will include an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming Disney+ series.

Disney has announced that Gareth Edwards' dark adventure in the galaxy far, far away, which many fans consider to be the best Disney-era Star Wars movie, will be re-released in select IMAX theatres starting August 26th.

Rogue One introduced us to Diego Luna's Cassian Andor, the Rebel fighter who joined Jyn Erso on her suicide mission to steal the Death Star plans, leading to the destruction of the original planet-killing Imperial space station.

Check out the new IMAX poster for the movie below.

Of course, Cassian and the rest of Jyn's team perished at the end of Rogue One, so Andor will be a prequel story charting the young saboteur's rise through the ranks of the rebellion. We're not expecting many other characters to appear, but Forest Whitaker's Saw Gererra did show up in the most recent trailer.

Disney didn't put out a new IMAX trailer for Rogue One, but you can check out the one that debuted when the movie originally hit theatres back in 2016 below, along with the official press release.

Lucasfilm announced today that IMAX will be showcasing the feature film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and exclusive, special footage from “Andor,” Lucasfilm’s newest, upcoming series for Disney+, in 150 IMAX theaters across the U.S. and Canada for one week beginning on August 26. Tickets are on sale now at participating IMAX theaters: https://www.imax.com/RogueOne and at fandango.com/RogueOneIMAX.

The IMAX release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has garnered over $1 billion at the worldwide box office since its release in 2016. The story follows a group of unlikely heroes, who, in a time of conflict, band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are the producers, and John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serve as executive producers. The story is by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, and the screenplay is by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy.

I wish they'd also put it in normal theaters as an option.

E.T. was in theaters this past weekend. I would have gone to see it in theaters since I never got to as a kid, but I wasn't going to spend $18 to see it since it was only showing in IMAX. Had I been able to go see it in a normal theater at a cheaper price, I would have gone.

Instead, Bullet Train got my money (and it was awesome).

@thewanderer - Where was E.T. in regular theaters?

thewanderer - 8/16/2022, 11:54 AM
@TyrantBossMedia - it wasn't, just IMAX.

What I meant is that I WOULD have seen it in regular theaters at a regular price as opposed to paying $18 to see it in IMAX.

@thewanderer - Oh. Yes, I looked that up after you mentioned it. I would never have spent $18 to see a 40 year old movie.
Thank you.

@TyrantBossMedia - especially when I was able to see Bullet Train for $6.75.

I forgot this even existed.
There's literally nothing relevant that happens in this movie that isn't already simply explained in a single sentence from the original crawl in Star Wars from 1977.

They should not have [SPOILER] killed the main characters at the end of Rogue One. That is one of the best entries in the Star Wars saga and the tone and smart storytelling is how ALL Star Wars films should have been.

I’d rather watch the prequels and sequels and originals. Rogue One and Solo were both disappointing films.

@slickrickdesigns - and the sequels? That's rare, but I get it

Rogue One and Solo for me are the only non-dissapointing Disney Star Wars movies.

@bkmeijer1 - good to know someone enjoyed them.

@slickrickdesigns - I think most fans liked Rogue One over the Sequels. I hat didn’t you like about it? I had some problems with the first half but that second half saved the movie.

@TheSuperMex - it was the whole movie. Answered questions I wasn’t asking, like “how did that information about the Death Star get to Leia?”. I myself could care less about that story. It also involved characters I just didn’t get invested in enough to care about what happened to them. I would’ve liked to see the blind ip man use the force or turn his staff into a lightsaber.
The movie isn’t horrible it just wasn’t meaningful in anyway to me. I did like watching Vader clean up the rebel scum in that last scene.
The sequels to me were just more entertaining and got me interested in what was going to happen next. They weren’t great but they were good enough to keep me wanting to see more. Not a fan of what they did with Luke but the Rey and Kylo stuff was good.

Rogue One is top tier Star Wars. This should be one of their guiding lights

I hoped that the look of this film (and to some extent, SOLO), would dictate the style of the TV shows. Only MANDO (especially the early episodes) seemed to try to duplicate ROGUE ONE’s aesthetic, while BOBF
and OBI-WAN disappointingly had a more prequelly, soundstage look.

ANDOR seems to be bringing us back to the RO look and feel.

I went to check if my local cinema was gonna screen it too, but unfortunately not.

What I did find is that it's screening the entire extended edition of the LotR trilogy. No ill will towards Rogue One, but I know what I'm gonna spend my money on (even if RO was screening).

They would have my money IF they re-cut it with all those scenes from the original marketing campaign.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/16/2022, 11:51 AM
@IronGenesis - I think a large part of those scenes were meant to be just for the marketing campaign as well.

Don't think the scenes from the original cut before the reshoots would make sense with this version though, although it would be cool to see.

@bkmeijer1 - Man…I just thought that scene of them running on the beach having to go past the Imperial Walkers was so incredible cinematic in scope.
A missed opportunity IMO.

@IronGenesis - think anything from that third act looked amazing, but I'm still very happy with what we got

How about you release the original trilogy with the original prints!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/16/2022, 11:53 AM
@bobevanz - would be cool if Disney gave us the option to watch the different versions of Star Wars (original, 1997, 2004, etc) just like how we get a choice to watch the normal or Imax enhanced version.

I really like this movie because they did something different. And the way they connected it to first hope was amazing!

AND!!!

The Darth Vader scene at the end was one of the best scenes from ANY Star Wars movie.

This movie has grown on me over time. It probably is the strongest Disney era movie. I’d argue that last act is probably one of the best of any Star Wars film. I still have issues with the characters not being memorable and the first two thirds, but maybe this series will help with that.
