What is cooler than getting a new Star Wars movie this year? Getting a new Star Wars movie this year and next year...that's what! Most of the general public is unaware that a spin-off movie is on the way in 2016. We are about to enter a new era of Star Wars and it is going to be wilder than you are probably anticipating.
Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is directing the film which is scheduled for a 2016 release, with a script that is be rewritten by Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass). We reported on a rumor last fall that revealed that the movie would be a heist movie featuring bounty hunters, that takes place around the time of A New Hope. There have been subsequent chatter that Boba Fett and Han Solo would be the main leads, however that hasn't been substantiated.
What is known is that Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), along with Rooney and Kate Mara, has been one of the top rumored contenders for an unspecified starring role for months now. In the past few days, Maslany pulled out of a play and the rumor mill went into overdrive claiming that she had secured the lead role in the movie. That still has not been confirmed, however we have come across some rumored details of Maslany's character and how Boba Fett will fit into the continued Star Wars universe.
The rumor is that Maslany is playing none other that Sabine Wren from the new animated Star Wars Rebels TV show. Not only is Star Wars Rebels a quality show, it is literal Star Wars history unfolding before your eyes. Wren is a Mandalorian weapons expert who is one of the more prominent characters on the show. The movie would take place a few years after Star Wars Rebels and Wren would have transitioned into being a bounty hunter by that point. If this is true, the Star Wars franchise has secured an extremely gifted actress to bring the character to life.
This is a brilliant plan if the rumor holds up. It is another entry point of identification into the world of Star Wars. Adults and parents will be largely going to revist a fantasy world that they once knew. While kids who may have never gotten the chance to see a Star Wars movie in theaters, will be able to explain an area of the universe that their parents may have no idea about. It is an awesome cross-generational plan. Hopefully this holds up.
In regards to Boba Fett's involvement, we can expect to see him in the movie and many other future Star Wars adventures. Disney has made it clear that they are aware of the character's popularity and intends to increase his presence. However many have been curious how they will handle Boba Fett's advanced age. The easy answer is they won't.
“Boba Fett is a mantle. The name, the ship and the armor gets passed down to a successor. That's how he is brought back for the films and explains the character for later stories...Fett fans are in for a few surprises. They [Disney] get the cult status of the character, so you're going to see more Boba Fett in the future.”
According to iKwiz, Disney is trying to get Michael Fassbender to wear the legendary outfit and jetpack. However Fassbender is extremely busy with Jobs and X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set to film in April. So we will see if that actually pans out. What is interesting is that the mantle of Boba Fett is passed down. With that in mind, expect to see the character pop up all over the Star Wars universe and it would not be surprising to see him appear in The Force Awakens and beyond.
