JJ Abrams mentioned that last names where intentionally left out because they were spoilers.   With all the news and promotional materials that came out of D23 this past weekend I have theorised what their last names are.  Possible spoilers below.

FINN - We’ve seen the toy box art leak of Finn’s action figure with name Finn (Jakku). We also know that Jakku is the desert planet within the Star Wars universe (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jakku) and likely the planet we see featured in both of the teasers. You’ll notice in the toy box leak Finn’s figure did not include a light saber. Just a blaster in his right hand. However in the official movie poster released at D23 we have Finn holding what looks to be Luke’s blue lightsaber from Empires Strikes back.

Taking this two points into account and Luke’s voiceover line from the second teaser trailer “...and you have it “ I believe Finn to be Finn Skywalker. Luke Skywalker's son.  I know what you are thinking, but he’s black,  my response is: so what. I really hope i do not need to explain this. Has Luke be living a solitary, celibate life over the last 30 years? I really doubt it. I can also see Star Wars using some extended Legacy universe Mara Jade Stories as inspiration for Finn’s mother. But I’ll come back to that in a second.

REY - She seems to be the central character of this film. She has received a great amount of screen time in the first 2 teasers as well as all of the promotional marketing. She’s front and center on the official movie poster.  She is this trilogy’s Luke.

We also know from all the press Han Solo will also be a major character in this film. However we still don’t know Rey’s last name. She’s the only major character without a last name, prefix or a surname for that matter. Finn has (Jakku), Phasma has Captain and Poe has Dameron.  With those two points I’m going to put it out there that Rey is the Daughter of the legendary smuggler Hans Solo and rebel leader Princess Leia. I don’t believe her resemblance to Leia was a casting coincidence. My theory that Rey’s character is inspired by Jaina Solo from the extended Legacy universe. And like the extended universe she is not an only child and has a major connection with another Force Awakens character.

KYLO REN - Another character that JJ mentioned that his true last name would be a major spoiler. Ren is not Kylo's official last name but a title given to his association to the Knights of Ren. I’m not going go into details on any of the theories on the Knight of Ren here. (But I would like to see them having some connection to the old republic legacy universe. Some of the leaked concept art seems to be heavily inspired by Revan’s mask from the Old Republic.   Like Finn, I can see this film pulling from some extended universe legacy storylines – in particular the Solo Twins story. There were rumors before JJ Abrams came on board to direct that there was a script floating around focused on the Solo twins.   My theory is that Kylo is inspired by the extended universes’s Jacen Solo/ Darth Caedus.  Rey’s twin brother. One who fell to the darkside of the force after some sort of life altering event. I’m not saying that Yuuzhan Vong will have anything to do with this or be a part of this new Star Wars Universe. However something in his past send him in search of his ancestry, his legacy and why he is obsessed with Darth Vader. His grandfather.  Coming back to the point about Finn’s mother I do believe that Kylo will have something to do with her death.  The trailers / behind the scenes footage has Finn looking that he is out for revenge. It is Kylo he’s seeking out? I’m excited to see why this December.

One commonality on all my predications are there connection to the extended legacy universe. We know that the extended Legacy universe is no longer canon however I do believe they heavily inspired the new trilogy. What are you thoughts?

As much as any of this stuff may seem likely, I do hope they don't retread the Solo twins arc from the EU. Sure, it's a great and natural progression of the characters, but I'd hate to see JJ just do what's been done before.
