STAR WARS: Ahmed Best Ponders Possible Jar Jar Binks Return; Reveals Impact Fan Backlash Had On Him

Ahmed Best has reflected on nearly taking his own life following the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace backlash, revealing whether he'd now return as Jar Jar Binks and whether The Mandalorian was "redemption."

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was released in 1999, and immediately promised to reveal Darth Vader's origin story. However, expectations were so high that there were many longtime fans of the franchise who were unhappy with what filmmaker George Lucas dreamed up.

He's maintained that Star Wars is, and always was, made for 12-year-olds, and kids at the time mostly loved the movie (hence why the prequel trilogy now gets a lot more love). For those who found that Episode I didn't resonate with them, Jar Jar Binks quickly became the main target of their frustration.

Websites like JarJarSucks.com and JarJarBinksMustDie.com soon started showing up, while not even actor Ahmed Best was able to escape the backlash.

In an interview with The Guardian (via SFFGazette.com), he reveals that after his phone number was leaked, he soon found his answering machine filling up with abuse and death threats. Between that and claims Jar Jar was a racist stereotype, Best very seriously contemplated taking his own life.

On a foggy night at 3am, he was clinging to the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge and remembers thinking, "'I’ll show all of you. I’ll show you what you’re doing to me. And when I’m gone, then you’ll feel exactly what I went through.'" He added, "'It was terrible. It was the lowest I’ve been in my life."

Realising he wanted to live after a gust of wind prompted him to reach out for a nearby girder, Best managed to find his way back to safety and moved on from Star Wars. Explaining that, as a Black actor, he saw the opportunity to make history by playing the CG Jar Jar (which was groundbreaking technology at the time), Best confessed he was disappointed to see the character sidelined in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith

"Here I am, a significant character who changed movies, and then I’m a footnote - I barely appear," he recalls, revealing it played a role in his decision to step out of the spotlight in the years that followed.

However, when the chance to return to Star Wars as The Mandalorian's Jedi Kelleran Beq came his way, Best didn't hesitate to say yes. "It really felt good. As an artist, I lost my confidence for so many years, but The Mandalorian gave me that affirmation of: You were always doing the right thing. It wasn’t you.'"

"I don’t feel like Jar Jar - or I - need redemption. I’m looking at it as our redemption, as the people who love Star Wars."

As for whether he'll ever play Jar Jar again, the actor says, "I would never say never. I don’t feel like Jar Jar’s story was ever closed. But right now, I would like to explore more Kelleran Beq. I’d love to do a Star Wars martial arts show – like a Jedi John Wick."

Sign us up for that! You can hear more from Best in his podcast The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks.

How he got blamed and shamed is borderline criminal but let's also not forget that the character and those movies in generally did suck.

I want to see more from this character.

The sequence he's in was awesome. Fits perfectly on a game like Jedi Survivor.

Not going to end well when the fanbase as a whole literally got a higher IQ than any of their writers put together

The prequels weren't great and I really dislike Jar Jar (mainly just because he was overused in the first one) but what Ahmed Best had to deal with was horrible and the fact he was pushed so far that he very nearly took his own life is tragic.

I'm glad he managed to pull himself out of that and move forward, and got a chance to re-enter the Star Wars franchise as Kelleran Beq, and hope he gets the chance to reprise the character soon.

@JoshWilding Not to be a prescrptivist pedant, but "hence why" is agrammatical. The preferred construction would either:

"which is why the prequel trilogy now gets a lot more love"

or

"hence the increased love the prequel trilogy gets now"

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine . . .

Has he ever commented on the theory he signed up to be Darth Jar Jar and when the plan changed so drastically after Ep1 he kinda was screwed?

I think that redeeming jar jar in Andor or some serious star wars film would be better for the legacy of the character. Tone down the silliness and add complexity to this character built by time and experiencing tragedy.

@EnergyVamp - Jar Jar should return in Kenobi season 2, he could bring important information from Mon Mothma to the recluse Jedi, but he gets lost. Kenobi finds him in trouble, no less, and has to bail him out. He reveals why he came looking for him. Then Qui-Gon chimes in with something that Jar Jar is talking about. Which leads to a new story. Maybe he helps Andor unknowingly, or vice versa.

I do know one thing though, too much Jar Jar is bad. He should do that one thing for Mon Mothma and head back to Naboo.

I’m glad Ahmed Best is in the Mandalorian now, it’s nice to see him play a Jedi. He deserves it.

@Timerider - Seeing Jar Jar play a major role that either leads to the safety of Luke, destruction of the death star, heck even the downfall of Thrawn would be a full circle way. I think a hardened and wise Jar Jar as a side character wouldnt be too bad

@EnergyVamp - the reason I said Kenobi is because Qui-Gon saved his life and for him to return and help Master Kenobi save the galaxy, as well as it bringing The Phantom Menace back into the overall story of all these shows would be cool to see. He was there for Anakin and he could be there for Luke and babysit from afar, while Ben does his thing.

Boba Fett was lamer, in less of the films, and was less of a character and he got a whole show so why wouldn’t we see Jar Jar again? I said what I said

@Twenty23Three - Can't disagree with that. People's obsession with Boba Fett got so annoying. Just because he "looks cool". Then they give the guy a show and it sucks.

Best seems like a solid guy and totally didn't deserve all the shit "fans" gave him back in the day.
It's good to see he's come through it all in spite of a lot of negativity directed at him.

I wish I could say the same for Jake Llyod, but dude is in pretty rough shape. Same thing though; while his performance is far from great, it's pretty low hanging fruit to bag on a kid actor and people constantly bullying him growing up. The guy has a lot of mental health and substance abuse issues now and I'm not sure if he'll ever really be able to be at peace. Both Best and Llyod got a pretty raw deal.

Okay that's enough. Poor Ahmed Best. He was dressed up as character who was then recreated by CGI.

He could have easily gotten more work as himself without any costume. The more I hear from him the more it sounds like he just didn't like that they criticized Jar Jar which is a horrible character.

If you want to feel bad for someone who has a legitimate gripe, then talk to Jake Lloyd. He was a good little actor in Jingle All the Way with Schwarzenegger.
Lucas does not know how to direct kids, or actors for that matter. That's why I wish Spielberg would have accepted the directorial job for Phantom Menace when Lucas asked him in the first place.
Spielberg is great at directing kids and Lloyd would have done much better also Anakin would have been a much better character.

Lloyd was mocked endlessly and it wasn't entirely his fault. Hell he was ten years old.

But "poor Ahmed Best"....I'm sorry the ADULT had it so tough.

Give me a break.

I’m not a touchy-feely person and I generally avoid physical contact with strangers, but Ahmed Best is pretty much the one actor I’d want to give a hug. I was 10 when Phantom Menace came out and I loved it, and Jar Jar was a favorite. Even today, rewatching it turns me into a wide-eyed kid again. A lot of the vitriol is forgotten today, but there was literally a website called JarJarBinksMustDie.com. 🤦‍♀️
