"Creating magic is not for amateurs..."

Star Wars creator George Lucas has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since selling Lucasfilm to Disney over ten years ago, but the man who first brought us to the Galaxy Far, Far Away has noticed a disturbance in The Force, and is back to set things right.

Late last year, we learned that controversial former Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter had joined forces with veteran Disney executive Jay Rasulo and pledged his considerable Disney shares to billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz, whose firm, Trian Partners, has a $3 billion stake in Disney.

After taking their case to shareholders, the investor is looking for three out of the twelve seats on the board.

Disney has come right out and stated that Perlmutter has a "personal agenda" against Iger and that his interests "may be different than that of all other shareholders," but with Ike's shares alone making up 80% of Trian's stake, they could obviously cause some big problems.

Now, Iger has a powerful new ally in the ongoing proxy fight with the activist investors.

“Creating magic is not for amateurs. When I sold Lucasfilm just over a decade ago, I was delighted to become a Disney shareholder because of my long-time admiration for its iconic brand and Bob Iger’s leadership,” Lucas said in a statement (via THR). “When Bob recently returned to the company during a difficult time, I was relieved. No one knows Disney better. I remain a significant shareholder because I have full faith and confidence in the power of Disney and Bob’s track record of driving long-term value. I have voted all of my shares for Disney’s 12 directors and urge other shareholders to do the same.”

Lucas is the latest high-profile name to come out in support of Iger and Disney following similar statements from the family of Walt and Roy Disney, as well as shareholder services firm Glass Lewis, which released its recommendation to support the Disney board this week.

We don't know exactly how much Disney stock Lucas owns, but he has been confirmed as the company's largest individual shareholder. When the Mouse House acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion, the deal reportedly included as much as $1.8 billion in stock.

Perlmutter made a lot of enemies during his time at Marvel, and reportedly attempted to stand in the way of the studio developing both Black Panther and Captain Marvel because he didn't think toys depicting Black and female superheroes would sell.

According to one source, when the decision was made to replace Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in the 2010 Iron Man sequel, Perlmutter told a Disney executive that the move saved money and no one would notice because "Black people look the same."

Perlmutter is no fan of Kevin Feige, either, so if he does manage to regain some power at Disney, some major changes at Marvel Studios could well be on the horizon.

@AllsGood - yes, a troll is someone pointing out objective reality.

Keep in mind George lucas referred to disney as the "white slavers" and is now suddenly coming to their defense when he's literally got stock in the game?

@Origame - George Lucas has apologized for remarks he made in an interview in which he referred to Disney as "white slavers". Lucas, the creator of the original Star Wars films, sold the franchise to Disney for $4.05bn in 2012. Last week, the filmmaker told US TV host Charlie Rose he had sold his "kids... to the white slavers".

@AllsGood - yeah, sorry. I'm not buying the apology when, as I've said, he's in Disney's pocket. This was honesty.

Interview with George Lucas and his wife telling a student that he has lost control of Star Wars and Disney took the property in a direction HE NEVER INTENDED for it.

This is post white slaver apology that he gave to save face but clearly still obviously meant.

@Origame - I think he's just saying that he didn't fully expect Disney to do what they did with the IP and at least publicly is trying to do something about it. Whether or not they do remains to be seen...not like George needs the money.

krayzeman
krayzeman - 3/20/2024, 9:28 AM
@otakuman007 - No. Ike tried to derail Black Panther, tried for force Inhumans and created a toxic work environment. We wouldnt have gotten Civer War, Infinity War and Endgame with his penny pinching arse. It was either gonna be him or Kevin Fiege and i'll take Fiege creativity over Ike's penny pinching any day.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/20/2024, 7:33 AM
Ok , I don’t really get this whole thing but if Ike does get 3 out of the 12 board seats then the majority is still with Iger & Disney who can veto any decision those others make so I don’t see the big deal…

Am i missing something?
RedFury
RedFury - 3/20/2024, 7:41 AM
@TheVisionary25 - that's what I'm wondering too. But maybe they're worried about him swaying the other board members in his favor, and causing a hell storm. Rich people love money, and some under the table bribes, or blackmail could be all that's needed to sway some folks in his favor.

Also since he would have 3 seats, it makes me wonder if the board of 12 seats, actually isn't 12 people? Again I have no idea how this works, so I'm just spit balling.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/20/2024, 7:49 AM
@RedFury - yeah me too

I could see him possibly trying to sway people to his side , thus would allow him to get his foot in the door atleast.
MadThanos
MadThanos - 3/20/2024, 7:36 AM
Iger already lost.

He never faced such push back by investors. It means not only public humiliation, but it means he can't run the company the way he wants, because all eyes are on him now.

They'll wait until Iger missteps to remove him.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 3/20/2024, 7:41 AM
@MadThanos - iger is fixing the mistakes of Chapek. He didn’t even want to come back. Disney begged for him to come back. Give him time. Disney stock is rising.
MadThanos

Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 3/20/2024, 7:50 AM
@MadThanos - give it time. I know we’re 4 years out of 2020. But Covid messed up a lot of stuff. It was claimed had there been no Covid. Disney plus would have had a ton of content and could have potentially usurped Netflix. Helping them get out of debt quicker.

And chapek messed up a lot. Not saying Iger is perfect. But he is better than Ike. I’d take him any day over him.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/20/2024, 8:56 AM
@Mrnorth1921 - When most of the new Marvel and Star Wars content had been terrible in recent years, how would more content have made them in a better place? I’d think it would have damaged the brands even more than they already hVe
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 3/20/2024, 10:04 AM
@mountainman - chapek greenlit a million shows. He wanted content for Disney plus. However iger can’t cancel the ones that were in development. And some of these shows have potential.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/20/2024, 10:08 AM
@Mrnorth1921 - I can go by the ones that have been released only. Most Marvel and Star Wars shows released so far have been bad to ok. Only a few good ones. Not a good track record at all. More quantity would not have lead to more quality most likely.
Origame
Origame - 3/20/2024, 10:09 AM
@Mrnorth1921 - no, he's fixing his own mistakes that he blamed his scapegoat chapek on.

Seriously, chapek was only there for a few years. What could he have possibly done to cause that much damage? Most of what came out in that time was from when iger was still in charge.

@Origame - Iger left after Endgame.

Coincidence? I think not.
Origame

@ObserverIO - dude, he would've greenlit projects for years down the line.

By the time he left we also had the phase 4 line up. Coincidence? I think not.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/20/2024, 10:39 AM
@Origame - He was locking the door behind himself for good. He wouldn't have cared if he'd left the fawcett on.
