Could Star Wars: Episode IX introduce Mara Jade to the main saga canon?

This Expanded Universe/Legends character has long been a fan-favorite, but nobody really expected the wife of Luke Skywalker to make an appearance in the films - especially after the events of The Last Jedi. However, our friends over at That Hashtag Show have shared some details on a new female lead that's currently being cast for the final installment in the trilogy, and the codename being used is Mara.

"Abrams, along with casting director Nina Gold, who has worked on both Episode VII and Episode VIII, are searching for a female lead, 40-50 years old, to play the role of "MARA." It's common practice for film's to use code names during the casting process, and that could be the case here. To be clear, we're only able to confirm that they are looking to fill the role of a female lead who they are calling "MARA."

Like they said, the name they're using may have nothing to do with the character, and could even be a deliberate attempt to throw people off track. Still, we can't ignore the possibility that Mara Jade - or a new character inspired by her - might make her live-action debut in Episode IX.

What do you guys make of this? Do you think Mara will be introduced? If so, what role do you expect her to play now that Luke is out of the picture? Sound off below.

Just in the process of re-reading Zahn's Thrawn trilogy. I'd say they're too smart to introduce a Mara Jade inspired character one movie after they killed off Luke. Then again...

Nah, I don't think so, just a casting name.

The books are the only true canon per George Lucas, but them introducing Mara at this point would be worse than what they did in TLJ. After butchering Luke's character, if they then bring in his wife, it could only damage the franchise worse than it already has been.

I'm so over this franchise :( I've was the biggest fan growing up ever since I saw A new Hope in the theaters in 77', But I'm done. It's been one disappointment after another ( besides Rogue one )for the last 30 years. Maybe someone can make Battlestar Galactica into a great franchise of what Star wars should have been.

I mean, I would love Mara Jade to return to canon. I've been wanting that for a while...At the same time however, why now in the films? Like I'd be fine if they introduce her in the books to further explore Luke's new canon backstory, but in the films, her presence might be a bit weird.

While I wouldn't mind Mara, I want Ahsoka in live action.

I used to be in the mindset of "they can't introduce her because it would coo fuse general audience that anakin had a padawan"

but then I thought [frick] it.

They have introduced a host of new characters wiht no explaination to their back story (Snoke, Maz, etc).

And considereding this triology is 30 years after ROTJ, there is no need for her connection to Vader to be adressed.

Ahsoka survived past ROTJ + canonically her species lifespan hasn't be stated (she could live to 100, 500 or even 1000).

She would just be a pagan force user. That Rey looks to for help against the first order and knowledge.
