STAR WARS: EPISODE IX Moves To Dec. 2019 For A Showdown With WONDER WOMAN 2; ALADDIN Set For May 2019
Hot on the heels of that director news, Disney & Lucasfilm have announced that Star Wars: Episode IX will now open in December 2019, which sets up a very big showdown with Warner Bros. Wonder Woman sequel.
Following the announcement that J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) would return to the helm for Star Wars: Episode IX, Disney & Lucasfilm have returned with the film's new release date. Instead of opening on May 24, 2019, the film will now grace silver screens worldwide on December 20, 2019.
This also puts the film on a collision course with the second weekend of Warner Bros.' highly anticipated Wonder Woman sequel, which had already been set to open the week prior on December 13. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot have been confirmed to return.
On another note, it looks like Disney had no plans on keeping that prime holiday release date vacated for long as they've separately announced that Guy Ritchie's live-action Aladdin will officially open during that Memorial Day weekend, May 24, 2019. Mena Massoud (Jack Ryan), Naomi Scott (Power Rangers), and Will Smith (Bright) headline the cast of the upcoming remake, which only recently began principal photography.
