Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are not the only heroes fighting the Empire in 2027. Lucasfilm and Wizards of the Coast have revealed the first two Star Wars books for Dungeons & Dragons, and the first adventure drops players into the Galactic Civil War as a secret Rebel crew running missions while the movie heroes are busy with their own battles. The books were revealed during the Disney and Lucasfilm publishing panel at New York Comic Con on October 9, where the cover of Tyro Squadron: Adventures and select artwork were also shown.

The second book is Dungeons And Dragons Star Wars Core Rules, and both are set to arrive next year. The official Dungeons & Dragons account shared the reveal on X shortly after the panel, and the post has already passed 5,000 likes. Check it out below:

A Rebel Crew Between A New Hope And Return Of The Jedi

Tyro Squadron: Adventures is a pre-written campaign set during the Original Trilogy, which puts it somewhere in the stretch between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Wizards' description reads "take the fight to the Empire as part of a secret Rebel crew. Set during the Original Trilogy, these new stories unfold as Luke and Leia fight their own battles across the galaxy." Players will fly daring missions, explore new corners of the galaxy, and help shape the Rebellion's story in their own way.

Running a new crew's story next to the events of the films keeps the big moments fans know from the movies intact. Luke, Leia, and the rest of the main cast are off doing what they do on screen, while the party gets its own corner of the war to fight in. Fans of Rogue One and Andor will recognize the appeal of following Rebels who never got the spotlight in the original films. With "squadron" right in the title and daring missions in the description, starship combat also looks like it will be a big part of the book.

The cover goes all in on the classic era. It shows armed Rebel heroes, snowtroopers, and a droid, with Darth Vader looming over the whole scene. Sci-fi artist Amir Zand, whose work includes the Halo Encyclopedia and box art for Dune: Imperium, and longtime Magic: The Gathering artist Kieran Yanner both contributed pieces that were shown during the reveal.

Groups are not locked into the Rebellion era, either. Dungeon Masters can still set their own campaigns in any era or corner of the galaxy they like, and the adventure gives anyone who wants to jump straight into the Original Trilogy a ready-made story to start with.

A Rulebook Built For A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Dungeons And Dragons Star Wars Core Rules will be the main rules set for playing fifth edition D&D in the Star Wars universe. Wizards is handling it differently from its first big crossover, Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, which builds on the revised 2024 Player's Handbook, while Star Wars is getting its own core rulebook. Wizards has not shared how classes, Force powers, blasters, or lightsabers will work yet, and says more on the Core Rules will be revealed later.

The next look is already on the calendar. Wizards confirmed that a starfighter encounter is coming to Star Wars Celebration, which takes place April 1 to 4, 2027, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Celebration is marking the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars film, so a game set in the era that started it all fits right in at the show.

Wizards senior game designer Makenzie De Armas shared the reveal on X and wrote that she has "never had so much genuine fun, joy, and catharsis working on a project. More soon!" She also added a line prequel fans will know from Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith: "This is where the fun begins."

Part Of A Big 50th Anniversary Year For Lucasfilm

The D&D reveal shared the stage with a lot of Lucasfilm news. StarWars.com Editor-in-Chief Kristin Baver hosted the panel, which also showed off the first covers from the Star Wars 50th anniversary publishing program, tie-in books for Star Wars: Starfighter, and a new Ahsoka comic with a story by Dave Filoni. Ahsoka Season 2 arrives on Disney+ in January, and Star Wars: Starfighter, the Shawn Levy film starring Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, hits theaters on May 28, 2027. Lucasfilm describes the D&D project as the forthcoming Star Wars: Season of Rebellion tabletop roleplaying game.

Season of Rebellion is the name Wizards gave the collaboration when it first announced it during its D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con on July 30. Both books are part of D&D Universes Beyond, a crossover line that borrows its name from the Universes Beyond sets Magic: The Gathering has released since 2021. The line kicks off with Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, made with Blizzard Entertainment, which features rules for all 13 World of Warcraft classes, 16 playable species, more than 60 new spells, and seven of the MMO's dungeons reworked for tabletop play. It releases on November 17, with early access on D&D Beyond for Master Tier subscribers beginning November 3.

Star Wars also has a long history in tabletop roleplaying, and this is the second time Wizards has held the license. West End Games released Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game in 1987, and Wizards took over in 2000 with a d20 version that ran until 2010, including the popular Saga Edition. Fantasy Flight Games followed with Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny. That line moved to Edge Studio in 2020 and has stayed in print without any new books since then.

Would you rather roll up your own Rebel pilot for a mission during the Original Trilogy, or wait to see if the Core Rules let you play a Jedi or a Sith from another era of the saga?
