Does the "Skywalker Saga" really have to end? While George Lucas planned out a nine movie arc, you have to believe that the story could continue beyond
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
During a recent interview with
The New York Times, director J.J. Abrams was asked about the future of the franchise and it certainly sounds like he's open to the idea of continuing this story.
"Can it go on?" the filmmaker ponders.
"Of course it can go on. But there’s something bold about saying this is what the story should be. Any great ending is a new beginning on some level."
However, now that he's struck a deal with WarnerMedia, that's something he could be busy with for years to come, and where Star Wars goes next without the Skywalkers isn't something he's involved in. "I didn’t design that, so I don’t know." When he was asked if he could be the one to continue this Saga somewhere down the line, Abrams responded: "I just need one night's sleep."
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy agrees that "It doesn’t have to end." However, she's now starting to look beyond the current Saga. "We’re all custodians of something that George created, and we’re trying to do the best we possibly can," Kennedy said, adding that it was important to "recognize and honor what it is that he created — and move on. I think we’re ready to move on."
For now, it sounds like the focus will be moved to new characters and stories, but it's impossible to imagine that we might not one day get to catch up with the likes of Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron!
