STAR WARS: J.J. Abrams Opens Up On Whether He Would Return To Continue The "Skywalker Saga"

The Rise of Skywalker is being billed as the final chapter of the "Skywalker Saga," but could the story continue beyond that? Here's what J.J. Abrams had to say about a possible return to the franchise...

Does the "Skywalker Saga" really have to end? While George Lucas planned out a nine movie arc, you have to believe that the story could continue beyond Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

During a recent interview with The New York Times, director J.J. Abrams was asked about the future of the franchise and it certainly sounds like he's open to the idea of continuing this story. "Can it go on?" the filmmaker ponders. "Of course it can go on. But there’s something bold about saying this is what the story should be. Any great ending is a new beginning on some level."
However, now that he's struck a deal with WarnerMedia, that's something he could be busy with for years to come, and where Star Wars goes next without the Skywalkers isn't something he's involved in. "I didn’t design that, so I don’t know." When he was asked if he could be the one to continue this Saga somewhere down the line, Abrams responded: "I just need one night's sleep."
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy agrees that "It doesn’t have to end." However, she's now starting to look beyond the current Saga. "We’re all custodians of something that George created, and we’re trying to do the best we possibly can," Kennedy said, adding that it was important to "recognize and honor what it is that he created — and move on. I think we’re ready to move on."
For now, it sounds like the focus will be moved to new characters and stories, but it's impossible to imagine that we might not one day get to catch up with the likes of Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron!

I think they will continue the story set up by this new trilogy, but they shouldn't call it the Skywalker saga. The story is pretty good in my opinion, and although it follows a few Skywalkers, they just feel more like a spin-off story than part of the Skywalker saga

They can continue it if they want. If they did it wouldn't need to be about the light vs Dark side of the Force, like the entire Skywalker Saga has been. They could try something else, like the Yuzhon Vong Saga. It's just a continuation of the story after the sequel trilogy. It would be a continuation while being about something different.

Having said that. I hope they don't. Either jump har enough ahead in the future to where we have all new characters to deal with (not likely), or do what everyone has been begging for for once and do Knights of the Old Republic for God's sake.

Either way, the smartest way to go is to cut ties with these new characters and do something new.

I think JJ has a few significant shortcomings as a storyteller, but on my rewatch of TFA I really felt it was his calling to create worlds and populate them with characters who had high potential. I don't know how well he can do at fleshing them out in his first try or following up on them, but he definitely has an eye for worldbuilding

"recognize and honor what it is that he created — and move on. I think we’re ready to move on."

Well they nailed the "Moving on" part...now, they just have to perfect the honouring part.

@nikgrid - They havent "Moved on" at all. It's still rebels vs empire. It's still has the emperor and a luke skywalker charactar. There empire is in control of the galaxy. Nothing has moved on.

Even kylo has now went back to a master.

@nikgrid - I don't think they know how to even address the honoring part.

When the dust has settled, I really think they should get over their fear of the prequels timeline. Obviously would be cool if they go way back for a KOTOR movie. But honestly some of my favorite parts (on paper, at least) of Star Wars come from the prequels and those ideas of exploring the Republic, high society and the Jedi council at their height of power. Imagine how cool it would be to see a highly sought-after director with a vision tackle this era of Star Wars for the first time.

So the basic premise of Star Wars is good vs evil and the skywalker line is where the "chosen one" originated... Anakin, and then Luke. What is the point of "moving on" if the whole story revolves around that lineage?
I agree, you may need to move on from Luke, Han, etc but to move on from the Skywalker line makes no sense whatsoever in regards to SW.
And yes, people may have developed their favorite characters outside the Skywalker line but that doesn't change how important Skywalker is to the bulk of this universe.
Now if they decided to write that another person had been picked by the midichlorians (or however it happened) to be the Anakin equivalent then yes they may move on but that has not been built up to as even a possibility and it cheapens the Skywalker lineage importance as a result.

Its similar in the Matrix, Neo is the chosen one... throughout time. It is always Neo.
