STAR WARS: Lucasfilm Expected To Release REY Movie First; Updates On Dave Filoni And James Mangold's Projects

More details have emerged about Lucasfilm's plans for the Star Wars franchise on the big screen, including the fact Daisy Ridley's Rey movie is likely up first. However, some insiders have their doubts...

At Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced plans to explore the past, present, and future of this franchise in three upcoming movies.

James Mangold will take us 25,000 years into the past to tell the story of the first Jedi. Dave Filoni, meanwhile, is plotting an epic crossover event that will bring together the stories of TV shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka for what sounds like a finale to the New Republic-era of storytelling.

Finally, there's a movie from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that takes place 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker which will bring Daisy Ridley back as Rey.

According to a new story published by The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), this movie is expected to be the first of these projects released in theaters, with a December 2025 debut looking like a real possibility. A year later, we would get Filoni's movie, meaning there's time for additional seasons of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka before then.

Mangold, meanwhile, is expected to start work on his Star Wars movie after he's finished shooting his Bob Dylan biopic later this year.

After years of false starts, plenty of fans don't entirely believe these projects will become a reality, a sentiment many Hollywood insiders also seem to agree with.

"They don’t have a George [Lucas]," says one producer. "Kathy is not George. Filoni is kinda the closest at this stage." Another says, "If they don’t make at least that Rey movie, Lucasfilm will burn whatever goodwill it has left with this fan base."

It's hard to disagree with that point, and if Filoni's movie is going to end that particular era of storytelling, Lucasfilm will also be without its popular slate of fan-pleasing Star Wars TV shows (though The Mandalorian's third season has been nothing if not divisive in recent weeks).

We'll hopefully have more details to share with you soon as Kennedy did say she plans to reveal more details in the months ahead.

I'll believe any of these movies will get made when I sit down and watch them. I'd scrap the Rey movie and do the Mandoverse movie first

@TheShape9859 - and I find it hard to believe they have any outlines written at this point, they just needed to announce something for celebrations

None of these three projects really grab me. I haven't even watched Andor or the new season of Mando. Obi-Wan Kenobi really soured Star Wars for me.

@MovieMonster - Kenobi was a massive let-down, but I can't sing the praises of Andor enough.

It is the best writing live action Star Wars has ever had. Full stop.

Now, it IS very slow burn, but the payoffs hit perfectly. The show is borderline prestige television and I can't recommend it hard enough.

One thing I've got to say about Disney, they've got the only 2 franchises that are releasing films and series that are within the same universe.

Marvel and Star Wars.

Honestly, Dave Filoni is one of the best positioned creative individuals in history.

I've always thought the best way to tell these kind of world building stories is to have shows with film level budgets to build these long narrative arcs up, then have it culminate in an event film released in theaters. And now with the announcement Dave is getting his own Star Wars event film to bring all of his characters together and characters from that era of Star Wars.... is a dream come true.

Honestly, this is what I always wanted for DC characters, to have high budget mini series introduce the heroes and plant seeds for a larger threat in the different heroes shows, then have a big event Justice Film release to theaters to bring the big budget mini series together.

That is exactly what Dave is getting to do in the Star Wars universe and its really the first time in entertainment history, and Disney does have the only 2 franchises doing it.

@CoHost - You terminally-online, toxic man-babies have shit taste and consistently ruin the franchise for actual normal people.

Cope and cry.

All good until this "(though The Mandalorian's third season has been nothing if not divisive in recent weeks)."

While an observation you can phrase it differently so it sound more grounded in fact.

"Based on online feedback and reviews from fans The Mandalorian's third season has fans divided in recent weeks."

@NateBest

That being said...The WORST movie to start with is the Rey movie. The fans are not interested in Rey or a movie about Rey Palpatine.
Kennedy forcing the story about Rey first on the agenda is just her being prideful and saying "So you don't like Rey? Well now she WILL have the first movie after the Skywalker Saga".

Either she is petty or out of touch.

The Mangold story with the first Jedi 25,000 years ago (a longer time ago in a galaxy far, far away) at least sticks with the story that Kenobi told Luke in A New Hope.

"For over a thousand generation the Jedi were the guardians of peace and order in they galaxy."

So a generation I about 20 years. 1000 generations is 20,000 years.
So in those 5,000 years this first Jedi found or trained more Jedi and slowly established the Jedi order to the point where 5000 years later they become the guardians of peace and order.

I just hope they don't screw or woke it up.

Make an Old Republic movie. That's it. That's all you have to do. Show us Jedi vs Sith. Pick any cinematic from SWTOR and make that into a movie.

Makes sense about when Filoni's movie will come out. That gives us another season of Mando (even though this one has been disappointing most episodes) and at least a second season of Ahsoka.

Why is nobody talking about today's Mandalorian episode? It was epic! Total redemption for an average season so far, and pulled together some of the randomness of the previous episodes. The last five minutes were incredible. Can't wait for the finale next week. Should be awesome.

Announcing movies before you even have titles is exactly the kind of thing that has given Lucasfilm a bad name in the past. Seems they haven’t learned much from the shoot from the hip approach they e had since Disney acquired them

there goes getting away from the skywalker era (unless they are retconning her stealing the skywalker name)

not even one movie set away from it, and they are already going back

There. Fixed it for you.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, wants to see a Rey movie. F--k around and find out, Disney / Lucasfilm. F--k around and find out.
