STAR WARS: Rian Johnson's Trilogy Still In The Works...But It Could Be A Very Long Way Off

A new rumour claims that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still developing a Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm, but it doesn't exactly sound like it's a priority for the studio right now...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi remains a divisive movie, but the negative response to The Rise of Skywalker has somewhat overshadowed that. Many fans remain unsure what to think about plans for director Rian Johnson to helm an entire trilogy of Star Wars movies, and it's been a while since we've heard anything concrete about plans for those.

The filmmaker remains hard at work on the scripts according to some recent reports, and while story details have never been revealed, Johnson telling an original story outside of the Skywalker Saga is undeniably exciting. Now, though, we have a rumoured update on these plans.

According to LRM Online, while this Star Wars trilogy is still on the way and in the early development stages, the plan at Lucasfilm is to release the first instalment after Taika Waititi's standalone movie.

That's currently being eyed for a 2024 release, so Disney is clearly looking to give fans a break from the Star Wars franchise on the big screen (there's nothing scheduled for 2021 or 2022 either). This isn't a huge surprise after comments from Disney CEO Bob Iger, and attempting to redeem the franchise on the small screen first could be a smart move for Lucasfilm.

What do you guys think?

Seriously, Rian Johnson's trilogy seemed like a fantastic idea... before the release of TLJ. Now I'm not sure it's even an okay idea anymore. Really hope they just let this go and RJ gets to do more original stuff and Knives Out sequels.

This feels like non-news, not the least of which due to LRM’s unreliable track record. These films are so far away at this point that saying they’re “not yet cancelled” doesn’t mean much

Should’ve let him make episodes 7 and 9.

@TheJustinHammer - Ehh, I get the TLJ complaints, and I didn't love the film either, but it's still a lot better than JJ's Star Wars films imo.

I’m sure he’d do great with his own story. He just soured the whole Star Wars thing with how terrible TLJ was

Because J.J. Abrams did Episode 7 & 9, people are quickly to point out he should have done 8 too, so there was one consistent trilogy. But If Abrams did the entire sequel trilogy, we would have just gotten a save, predictable, by the numbers retelling of prior Star Wars movies and ideas. 7 & 9 are both too similar to previous movies and stupid ideas and execution. I for one would have thought giving Rian Johnson the entire sequel trilogy (7, 8 and 9) would have made a much more thematically rich experience and something at least different from the previous installments.

Giving Rian his own trilogy away from legacy characters and hopefully just completely his own, new thing is very exiting to me. However you feel about The Last Jedi, it's direction, set design, use of color, music, etc is al pretty great.

@Tcb97 - As far as I'm concerned neither of the two directors who worked on the sequel trilogy should have worked on the sequel trilogy. Or at least not without a competent plan and better leadership.

This guy managed to make a boring Star Wars movie and then insult fans with condescending responses to their criticism. Solo and ep9 both underperformed as a direct result of ep 8. If Disney go with him for 3 movies they are probably going to cost their shareholders a couple of hundred million

@GaryGaslight1 - Solo underperformed for multiple reasons (only hardcore fans cared about Han Solo origin movie, the budget ballooned thanks to the insane amounts of reshoots, it came out too soon after the previous SW movie and too near other big blockbusters, they started the marketing too late to generate any hype, generic trailers etc.), while Rise of Skywalker was just plain awful movie and therefore got terrible word-of-mouth.

At this point, I’d honestly rather be just stick to Benoit Blanc stories. This franchise is beneath him at this point.
