Transformers Legend And Voice Of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen, Has Died Aged 85

In a week that's seen us say goodbye to Dolly Parton and Tim Curry, another legend has sadly passed away, with Transformers icon Peter Cullen passing away at home on Wednesday surrounded by family.

"One shall stand, one shall fall."

Peter Cullen, the iconic voice behind Optimus Prime in the Transformers movies, TV shows, and video games, has passed away at age 85. The actor died at home on Wednesday.

In a brief statement shared by the actor's family, it's said that Cullen "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family — and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide."

They've asked his fans to "honour his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity and loyalty and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle.'"

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original The Transformers animated series, which debuted in 1984. He also voiced Ironhide in the series, but his portrayal of the Autobot leader became his defining achievement.

The actor later reprised the role in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie, and made the jump to live-action under director Michael Bay in 2007. He subsequently reprised the role in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers: The Last Knight, Bumblebee, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Cullen's connection to Transformers extended far beyond the movies. He voiced Prime across numerous animated series, including Transformers: Prime, Transformers: Rescue Bots, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, and Transformers: Titans Return. He also lent his unmistakable voice to the character in countless video games and other franchise projects. He was inducted into the Transformers Hall of Fame in 2010.

For generations of Disney fans, he was equally recognisable as Eeyore, the gloomy but lovable donkey from the Winnie the Pooh franchise. Cullen first took over the role in 1988 and continued voicing Eeyore across numerous animated films and television projects for decades.

Cullen also voiced Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, K.A.R.R. in the original Knight Rider, and later reprised the latter role for the 2008 revival. His extensive animation credits included Voltron, G.I. Joe, The Pirates of Dark Water, Megas XLR, and numerous other series. He also starred in Invincible, voicing Great Thaedus.

For more than six decades, Cullen proved how much personality and emotion can be delivered through a voice performance. He made a giant transforming robot sound noble, and a depressed donkey sound endearing, and his take on Optimus Prime has defined his legacy for generations of Transformers fans.

Our thoughts go out to Cullen's family and friends at this difficult time. The actor discussed what inspired his approach to Optimus Prime in ComicBookMovie.com owner Nate Best's interview with the actor from 2014. You can watch it below.

@Wahhvacado - they say it comes on waves of 3. I was hoping (hoping may not be the best word to use) that Hayden kicked it off and Tim Curry was the 3rd, but too much time passed between Hayden and Dolly. So now we know it was actually Dolly, Curry and Cullen. All in their 80s too.

RIP Legends

Transformers the movie had a rocking soundtrack.

@JusticeL - The soundtrack was incredible but the entire movie rocked. It was an awesome space odyssey. Peter Cullen gave Prime more gravitas than ever and Oren wells was fantastic as Unicron. The story of the chosen one who will one day reunite the Autobots and Decepticons was better than any Bayformer movie, and it looked incredible for its time. They even foreshadowed Hot Rod’s rise after Prime died. That move was unforgettable to a generation and Cullen was the main reason

The grim reaper has been quite busy this week. Just one of the many voices of my childhood just passed. R.I.P Peter Cullen. I'm sad yes, but think about it. These people died at the age of 80 or 80+. They lived full lives, travelled the globe, and had millions of fans all over the world. That's an amazing life. In the grand scheme of things that "long" life is just a blip. Make sure you live it to the fullest.

@DarthOmega - I think if I live to over 120 it would still be too short to have lived fully. But we get what we get and we're lucky to get that. That's gotta be enough. 120, 80 or a day, we all get the same; We get a lifetime.

I wonder if they will get permission from the family to use his voice. He IS Optimus Prime. Anyone else doing it is like someone trying to do Vader.

FlixMentallo21
FlixMentallo21 - 8/27/2026, 12:58 PM
@KaptainKhaos - agreed. There are plenty of worthy successors to Cullen, both past and present. Garry Chalk, Neil Kaplan, David Kaye, and Alan Tudyk are good examples for the former; for the latter, I can picture the likes of Phil Morris, Fred Tatasciore, Brian Bloom, and Richard Epcar as possibilities.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - nah, others have voiced Optimus

Garry Chalk

David Kaye

If they went with David Kaye he could play both Optimus and Megatron

Also does a good impression of Peter's voice

@CreateNowSlpL8r - I would imagine that Cullen's position on union status et al will mean it's a no. And rightly so. I think he would prefer someone else to pick up that pay check. Maybe Judd Nelson in the interim.

@dracula - Nah. On a good day I can closer than Kaye.

@dracula - I grew up with beast wars and beast machines so that clip with David Kaye reminded me too much of megatron. I know Kaye voiced Optimus in the animated series, but he didn’t sound as robotic in that, more his actual voice.

@FireGunn - "With the All Spark gone, we cannot return life to our planet. And fate has yielded its reward: a new world to call home. We live among its people now, hiding in plain sight, but watching over them in secret, waiting, protecting. I have witnessed their capacity for courage, and though we are worlds apart, like us, there's more to them than meets the eye. I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to any surviving Autobots taking refuge among the stars. We are here. We are waiting."

The voice of many people's childhood. I was born in 1978 and obsessed with Transformers as soon as the toys and TV shows took off in the mid 80s. At that stage none of us knew who Peter Cullen was or what he looked like (indeed, I don't think I ever saw a photo of him until the late 2000s) but that Optimus Prime voice was utterly unique and iconic; deep, powerful, authoritative, but dignified and also kind. He was the absolute perfect choice to portray Prime, an incredibly powerful Transformer and leader but one who also possessed great wisdom and believed in freedom and the sanctity of life. RIP.
