Despite reports that Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter will "have a significantly smaller budget" than the previous Disney-era films, it seems Disney and Lucasfilm spent a lot more on the next instalment in the franchise than we had been led to believe.

According to Forbes, Starfighter had cost the studio $226.5 million by the time filming had wrapped at Pinewood Studios, surpassing the sum spent during the same period on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was believed to be the most expensive movie ever made until 2022's Jurassic World Dominion.

"The filings show that the company spent a massive $226.5 million (£164.9 million) with one of the biggest single costs shown in the filings being the $17.6 million (£12.8 million) paid to the staff who came to a monthly average of 239 people. In contrast, Foodles Production (UK) – the FPC behind The Force Awakens – booked costs of £147.6 million from the outset to 12 days after filming finished. Likewise, Space Bear Industries (UK) – the FPC which made Disney’s second Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, spent £162.3 million from when it was incorporated to three weeks after filming finished."

However, there is a caveat. Starfighter landed a tax break for filming in the UK that reportedly reached as much as $51.5 million, which would bring the production budget down significantly to around $175 million.

It's still a gamble. Levy is a hot commodity after the huge success of Deadpool and Wolverine, but the underperformance of The Mandalorian and Grogu made it clear that Star Wars simply doesn't have the same drawing power on the big screen that it used to.

Set approximately five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, Starfighter stars Ryan Gosling as a cynical rogue from the less privileged side of the galaxy who encounters a teenager (Flynn Gray) who may or may not be Force-sensitive.

"With no governing force keeping order in the galaxy, the two are able to take a decommissioned enemy starfighter and embark on an adventure."

The impressive ensemble will also feature Matt Smith (Morbius), Mia Goth (Frankenstein), Aaron Pierre (Lanterns), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (Hedda), Daniel Ings (Lovesick), and Amy Adams (Man of Steel).

"I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter," Levy said in a press release when production began. "From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally."

He added, "Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.

The first teaser for Starfighter screened at D23 earlier this year, but has not been officially released.

I really hope they make Gosling the secret son of Luke to continue the true Skywalker bloodline (let’s face it, he does look like he could be related) but after that awful sequel trilogy it’s going to be Krayt Dragon sized task to get fans to return.

@dragon316 - Yes, but Ryan looks a lot like he could have come from Mark Hamil and be related to Hayden’s Anakin

For context, I hated the sequel trilogy. I hated the prequel trilogy.
Going back now I think the original trilogy is mid with a near perfect soundtrack.

But this…I have high hopes for it.

STAR WARS is [frick]ing DEAD

IGAF if they get Luke Skywalker to play Luke Skywalker at this point.

What [frick]ing story needs to be told AFTER that last shitshow trilogy?

M&G missed the mark solely because the popularity and gimmick of Grogu ran it's course. "Baby Yoda" was popular with the public through Mando's first two seasons, and then they 'completed' the mission of Grogu moving on, then immediately back peddled because they didn't wanna write out the character they thought was the draw.

Interest in Mando was sky high before it's premiere, with no sign of that green goblin in sight, bit Disney disregarded that in favor of a marketable, cute, cash cow side kick.

@TheWinkler - while I don’t mind grogu I think they should have kept the focus on Mando as the lead with the booger as a side quest.

SW is dead.
You can thank leftist political insanity.

In addition, Mark Cassidy using a loaded term such as "less privileged" says all I need to know about this column writer.

I’m legitimately concerned about the theatrical feature Star Wars. I’m not even someone who hates all of Disney Star Wars per se but it’s been more disappointing than enjoyable overall..

@Kahron0 - I’m more concerned about the viability of it tbh since interest seems to have declined then quality since I personally have enjoyed most of the Disney Star Wars films to varying degrees.

Favorite to least…

1.The Last Jedi
2.The Force Awakens
3.Rogue One/The Mandalorian & Grogu
4.Solo
5.The Rise of Skywalker.

Interesting , that tax break they got filming in the U.K will/should certainly help though…

Anyway , I hope Starfighter turns out well and as a result is financially successful also.

Gonna be a hell of a year for Star Wars in 2027 not just with this film but Ahsoka S2 , possibly Maul S2 , the 50th anniversary re-release of ANH and Star Wars Celebration in April amongst other things so hopefully it’s a good one!!.

@TheVisionary25 - releasing the 50th anniversary a few months before the actual anniversary is such an odd choice to me. Guess they have faith in Starfighter
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/23/2026, 12:13 PM
@bkmeijer1 - they likely don’t want it to collide with Starfighter since ANH came out on May 25th and Starfighter comes out on the 28th.

Hope this is good but the leaked teaser was very generic. I’m suspicious that at that price tag, this is going to bomb.
