Before the Prequels came out, Vader was the best in the SW universe... books and all, no question. One of the best villains in movies in general.

The way he was written and portrayed in Empire was... words escape me. He was subtly complex. This menacing, unrelenting, calculating force. Just so cold and confident. James Earl Jones' voice acting was so on point in every scene, and even David Prowse's minimal body language spoke volumes with every slow gesture. Vader barely moves except in the lightsaber battle (which, I argue, is by far the best in any Star Wars movie), but with that forceful, commanding voice, his character is terrifying in every scene. You never know when he is going to choke a bitch.

The Prequels kind of dented his mystery by poorly over-explaining his origins, but I can't think of another SW villain who is better. Empire alone solidifies his spot at the top.

@TomSolo - Yeah man, Vader for sure

Although I'd have to say Episode VI has the best saber fight... It simply oozes character from the controlled stance of Vader to the wild swinging of Luke as he lets his anger control him. That moment where he screams "NEVER!" and cracks open his lightsaber is just... Breathtaking...

@Doom303 - True, the end of that when Luke loses it and goes ape sh!t gets me choked up every time. Tons of emotion there, and maybe my favorite Mark Hamill scene in all of the trilogy.

Still, that image of Vader's silhouette at the top of the stairs in the Cloud City carbonate freezing chamber where he both acknowledges and dismisses Luke's power with the Force in one sentence is chilling to the bone. Vader can't even be bothered to use two hands until Luke loses control and briefly and unexpectedly taps into the Dark Side. The lighting, the camera shots, the acting and voice acting, and the dialog in that just duel... and really, it isn't a duel at all... more of a test, I think. It's a nerve-wrecking scene. And then you have the biggest revelation in all of cinema, ending with Luke choosing to sacrifice himself rather than doom the Galaxy, and thereby becoming a Jedi in that moment. The RotJ ending fight is great, but the Empire scene just does it for me.

@TomSolo - Oh for sure! Just that line "But you are not a Jedi yet."

Such a great bloody film!
