Steven Spielberg's Mysterious UFO Movie Sets Theatrical Release Date

Last month, we got word that Steven Spielberg's (E.T. Jurassic Park) next film would be a UFO movie based on his own idea, and the project has now set a 2026 release date...

Back in April, the news broke that Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park) intends to return to the sci-fi genre for a mysterious "UFO movie" based on his own original idea, and the project has now set an official release date.

According to Variety, the untitled film is set to hit theaters on May 15, 2026.

There's been speculation about the legendary director's next film ever since rumors did the rounds that he might be taking a long break (or possibly even retiring) after the release of The Fablemans, so it came as something of a surprise that this movie already in the early planning stages.

Details are practically non-existent right now, but the screenplay will be written by David Koepp, who has previously collaborated with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

For a while after the release of what arguably remains his most iconic film, Jaws, Spielberg was pretty much synonymous with the sci-fi genre, helming the likes of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and later A.I., Minority Report and War of the Worlds. His last sci-fi film was Ready Player One, which was (mostly) positively reviewed, but was seen as something of a disappointment when it comes to global box office takings (just over $600 million).

There are only a handful of filmmakers working today who can generate such widespread interest and excitement with news of their next project, and Spielberg is most definitely one of them. With this in mind, there's bound to be a lot of hype and speculation surrounding this mysterious movie, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates.

Spielberg is far from the only veteran filmmaker refusing to slow down, as Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon, Goodfellas) is now planning to shoot two films back to back: the first is his adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book Life of Jesus, which may end up starring Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller, and the second is a Frank Sinatra biopic with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence eyed to play the leads.

What do you make of this news? Excited about Spielberg's return to the sci-fi genre? Drop us a comment down below.

@TheShape9859 - if Henry Thomas is attached, I’d say that’s probably what it would be, but this will be different I think. I think this will be right after Roswell, and meeting the President for the first time and a treaty between them and us.

@TheShape9859 - The rumos say it's suppose to be closer to Close Encounters of the Third Kind in theme.I wonder if this movie is going to be the merging of that movie and Poltergeist that Spielberg has talked about wanting to do years back.

@Timerider - I'm aware of that story...I was in the Marines for almost 20 years and heard that story in passing more as a joking thing(that doesn't mean it didn't happen).Heck I've heard numerous odd stories from Navy guys about things they saw out on the sea long before this type of stuff was out in the public like it is now.

If SS really wanted to create a stir, he should do a terrifying R rated take on the subject ( GTFO with WOTW ), and subvert our expectations by going dark and void of shooting stars, kids on bikes, and cuddly monsters. Gimme Poltergeist, gimme The Mist

Great to see Spielberg return to the sci-fi genre. Jaws and Schindler's List are great, but Spielberg only has to say he's doing another sci-fi to get my interested

Yes! I’m sure John Williams will be attached to this project. I think this will be the first ever contact with humans and the President, set in 1952.

I hope it's better than Close Encounters. I used to love that movie, but there are some questionable plot points I found when recently rewatching it, like supposedly benevolent aliens not caring about causing accidents, terrorising single mothers or returning abductees to a world that's no longer the one they knew.

Cool , interested to see how it will differ from Spielberg’s past films in the “UFO” space.

Speaking of them , which one is your favorite…

I know most will likely say Close Encounters of The Third Kind though i have never seen it (I know) but E.T is a classic and I even found his take on The War of The Worlds to be decent even with the ending being as easy & rushed as it is.

@TheVisionary25 -

Close Encounters;

The only thing I didn't like about it is that the main character ditched his wife and children. He could have been written as single.

E.T.

The only thing I didn't like about it was that it made my eyes leak a little bit in one scene. 😥

War of the Worlds

The only thing I didn't like about it was the main characters wife's attitude and especially how she responded in the last scene she was in.

The daughter screaming all the time didn't bother. This is normal behavior with adult women in horror movies.

My favorite? I rarely think in terms of favorites (sorry). I liked some aspects about some more than others.

Close Encounters was full of wonder, E.T. was a nice family film, and WotW was straight up sci-fi horror (,it seriously creeped me out in some scenes).

@TheVisionary25 - War of the Worlds' strength is in how mankind panics trying to save itself and even turns against each other just to survive. And the things Tom Cruise's character has to do to stay alive. Years after seeing it on the cinema I can conclude that's it's real value more than humans vs aliens invaders.

If only Lucas had remained a true artist instead of a money hungry pig. We could've had 50 years of two great filmmakers and their great movies. But at least we got Spielberg.

Curious to see how the aliens will portrayed. It’s like they usually fall into two camps: they are benevolent creatures who the government can’t wait to get their hands on or malevolent creatures out to kill all. Sometimes a combo of the two.

More cutesy benevolent aliens making first contact & evoking a sense of wonder.

YAK!!!!

This kind of thing was great 40-50 years ago, but it's long worn out now. Plus, after seeing the last 2 horrible Indiana Jones movies, my trust in Spielberg doing sci-fi has pretty much melted.
