TV Line has the story, quoting from the forthcoming press release:

“Alphas’ smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience,” Mark Stern, Syfy’s president of original content, says of the pick-up. “From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we’re very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season.”

Alphas stars Strathairn (an Academy Award nominee for Good Night, and Good Luck) as Dr. Lee Rosen, a neuroscientist/quasi-therapist who oversees a collection of “alphas” with unique abilities. Among them: Warren Christie (October Road, pictured above) plays Cameron, who boasts superhuman agility; Malik Yoba (New York Undercover) is strongman Bill; Laura Mennell (Watchmen) is Nina, a beauty possessing the power of suggestion; Ryan Cartwright (Bones) plays, young man living with autism who can “see” airborne data streams; and Azita Ghanizada (Castle) is Rachel, a gal who can super-amplify any one of her senses.

The show, which concludes its first season on September 26th, will return for season two in 2012.

@DDD Totally agree! Ryan Cartwright is amazing, <3 Most people who play Autistic characters just go way over the top, he plays it perfectly!

and Laura Mennell is so beautiful and a good actress too.

Love the take on "superheroes" this show has BUT...

If you can't afford to shoot in NYC, or afford to make it LOOK like NYC (a la CSI: NY) then don't pretend it's NYC. Make up a fictional city.

Nothing in Alphas looks or feels like NYC -- from the streets to the parking lot outside their little building, even the lensing is all wrong for a place that's supposed to be NYC. And the third episode, which was supposed to take place on a NYC subway...WTF?! Not even close.

Friends' portrayal of NYC was closer than this show.

Awesome! This is my favorite non-premium cable show. Very cool powersets, but Hicks has my favorite powerwise. He's like Captain America and Bullseye combined.

@SDProphet Misfit's is amazing, but I wouldn't say 'better' , they're completely different plots and storylines XD the only thing similar is the powers. but they are both very good shows! :D

SdProphet - 9/7/2011, 4:55 PM
@cherry - I'd disagree they're quite similar in multiple aspects. There's a team. Personal struggles unique powers. Every episode deals with them finding others who have powers. Misfits is just well written and more raw than alphas

I want Eliza Dushku or Ali Larter to guess star in an episode...that would be wonderful!!!
eliza should play a girl with the abilities to see a persons worst fear, and can bring it to life...causing them horrific pain...creepy, but amazing!

it's a good show. as long as they don't over do it, like hero's, it should last awhile.

This show has grown on me and I like how Sy-Fy is making there own little universe. Alphas, Eureka and Warehouse 13 can make some interesting crossovers.

I wouldn't call Misfits raw as I would call it immature in some aspects of the show, they are teens and well as "heroes" they well suck at it. As for it being NYC who the frack cares only people from NYC really care if it is in NYC. Alot of shows are filmed in places that aren't where they are supposed to be Fringe is filmed in NYC but based in Boston I don't see people from Boston getting all up in arms about it.

CherryBomb - 9/8/2011, 4:10 AM

@SDProphet Alphas fight crime, find bad-guys, they're older, the tone is more serious.
Misfits is a lot more gritty, it's more humorous, more sexualised, they don't really fight crime or use their powers for 'good' necessarily they just fall into the situations.
SkaarJones
SkaarJones - 9/8/2011, 2:55 PM
@CherryBomb- Nina is cool, but that has never been a power that interested me. Also, it doesn't work on everyone. Hicks is just a beast!
