20th Century Studios, New Regency and Entertainment One (via SFFGazette.com) have released the first clip from The Creator, a new sci-fi action thriller from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards, starring Tenet's John David Washington.

The movie has been receiving quite a bit of positive buzz from those who have caught early screenings, but reviews are still embargoed for the time being.

In this sneak peek, Washington's ex-special forces agent, Joshua, discovers that the potentially catastrophic AI he's been tasked with destroying has taken the form of a young child. Upon relaying this information to his superior, he is given a kill order.

Of course, we already know he decides against this rather reprehensible course of action - but how long can he keep the girl safe when so many want her dead?

Check out the clip below, along with a new extended TV spot, behind-the-scenes featurette and some posters, and let us know if you plan on seeing The Creator on the big screen when it debuts in theaters later this month.

“Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.”

The Creator also stars Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles and Academy Award winner Allison Janney (I, Tonya), and is set to hit theaters on September 29.

Oh, the A.I. took the form of a cute little kid in order to make you think twice about killing it ?

If the A.I. figured that out, it needs a high-speed lead injection ASAP.

This majority of this movie was shot on a Sony FX3 and it looks so good.

This is huge! This just shows how overkill some youtubers are using RED cameras and stuff.

The only film left in 2023 that looks genuinely interesting.

I mean, the description makes it sound like some grand moral dilemma and even this site calls the kill order "reprehensible", but it sounds pretty clear to me.

If you're in a war against AI and its greatest threat to mankind takes the form of a child, you kill the child/weapon. It may be sentient but isn't even human. We kill untold animals that attack us (or even just because they're delicious) and kill untold humans when they threaten our lives (via war for the sake of self preservation, or executing dangerous criminals or bombing terrorists), yet we're supposed to wring our hands over a humanoid AI creation? May still be a good movie, but the storyline doesn't sound especially compelling.

@zephyrrr - #A.I.LivesMatter !

Sounds like an A.I. written script to get you to care about the A.I.

@zephyrrr - when you're in a war for survival, the first casualty is morality. It's really in your face, narrative audience manipulation but in a very high school student level. It might be executed well enough but contextually it doesn't make sense unless you make the AI the actual victim and its not really at war with humans(maybe there are mutliple versions of AI and humans want to destory all of them even the innocent ones but i dont know if thats in the story).

It's like they wanted that Last of Us/Logan/Aliens type movie where a traumatized main character learns to love again mixed in with dystopia AI war but in a way that doesn't gel atleast on the surface level. Who knows it might work.

Pick Dolby Cinema over Imax, there's no expanded aspect ratio for Imax. Trust me, movies are my life

The "impossible" decision isn't. What's next, AI is a fluffy kitten?

John David Washington is an overrated actor. He is pretty good, and people want to make like he's the next Michael Jordan, but he isn't. He does not have that presence. Being a black actor does not automatically make you "amazing".

@DocSpock - I don't even think he's pretty good actor even. Saw him in Tenet and Amsterdam, thought he was the worst in both.

Wasn't he a football player that decided to go into acting by essentially using his father's name? Nepotism is so strong in Hollywood, if his father wasn't Denzel he'd never make it past auditioning, he is not good, hope he got better at least.

Wow that's incredible how easily I went from being super hyped for this movie to having none. This whole A.I. as a cute kid so there's a moral dilemma idea is absolutely ridiculous. Reminds me of the movie Screamers where the A.I. takes human body parts and remakes little cute kids with them in order to act as a form of suicide bombers to get into the bases and kill everyone in horrible painful ways.

Fun Fact: Some animals, like dogs, are cute as babies as a defensive evolutionary process to protect themselves from humans since we value adorableness and are less likely to kill them.
