THE DARK TOWER TV Series Officially In The Works; Idris Elba Will Return As The Gunslinger

The Dark Tower movie will be released next year, but a spinoff TV series is officially in the works which will see Idris Elba reprise the role in what's being billed as a direct adaptation of one of the novels.

The Dark Tower movie will serve as a sequel of sorts to Stephen King's novels as it tells the tale of Roland Deschain's (Idris Elba) final journey to the titular structure the series is named after. That's something which should help the movie appeal to die-hard fans and franchise newcomers alike, but Entertainment Weekly now confirms that a TV series is in the works and set to premiere in 2018.

MRC has committed to making a full run of 10 - 13 episodes which will begin shooting in 2017. There's no distibutor yet, but a cable or online streaming service is desired due to the adult nature of the material. Elba has signed on to appear alongside Tom Taylor (who will play Jake Chambers in the movie) as a framing device of sorts due to this show adapting Wizard and Glass, the book exploring Roland's early years. As a result, a younger actor likely in his teens will be cast to play the budding Gunslinger.

There's no word on Matthew McConaughey's involvement, but given the Man in Black's habit of taking on different forms, that may not be an issue. Should the series prove to be a success, future seasons would likely adapt some of the events not depicted in the books like the Battle of Jericho Hill. This is a bold move considering the fact that there's nothing to say the movie will be a hit next year, but it's still exciting news for fans and a good sign that there are very big plans for this franchise moving forward.

@ALegendaryPanda - Westworld looks amazing. I assumed HBO would jump to get Dark Tower but maybe they don't want too many fantasy shows. Then again, GoT is coming to an end...

@Spider2YBanana - or FX. They make good stuff too, like Atlanta and Louie. But yeah, those are my thoughts too

@webheaded - I'll have to check those out. I stopped watching FX after Nip Tuck.

@Spider2YBanana - I gotta admit, Nip/Tuck was a huge guilty pleasure for me!! Until they moved it to LA and it got even more ridiculous. My brother is watching Atlanta and likes it. Louie is brilliant.

@Desr0w - He's great, but after playing the literal white hat for six years, the dude could use a break.

@Desr0w - All day every single fvcking day. Timothy as Roland would have pushed this movie over the top. Studios get far too caught up with "bankable stars" when it comes to films of this nature, I get it, you got a big budget and want somebody with a track record.

Look at Marvel's casting of the relatively unknown Chris Hemsworth as Thor though and you would see if an actor fits the character well enough and is a solid actor that would be preferable.

Elba looks nothing like Roland. I agree he has the gravitas, but that is it. Makes it feel more like an elseworlds story than anything else.
