The X-Files: David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson Expected To Return As Mulder & Scully For Ryan Coogler's Reboot

Though we're not sure the project can still be described as a reboot, it seems highly likley that Mulder and Scully will be back for Ryan Coogler's new X-Files series...

The truth is still out there, and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will soon continue the search for answers in a brand-new X-Files show that's set to premiere on Hulu at some point next year.

There were rumblings that the series, which will star Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler as a new pair of FBI investigators, might feature one or both of the original show's stars, and creator Chris Carter has now (pretty much) confirmed that the iconic duo of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) will return.

“At least Gillian, I think, is going to appear in the Coogler version," he tells Polygon. "And I'm assuming David will too, so you will see Mulder and Scully there.”

Carter hasn't seen the pilot yet, but he is an executive producer on the series, which is sounding less and less like the full reboot that was initially reported.

Anderson revealed that she had read the pilot script during an appearance at Awesome Con earlier this year.

"I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance because it’s gonna be f***ing cool. It’s something different. It’s different, and it’s special, so give it a break."

The X-Files focused on a pair of FBI agents, Mulder and Scully, who were tasked with investigating unsolved cases, usually involving some kind of supernatural or extraterrestrial elements. The show ran from 1993 until 2002, before returning 2016 for an additional two seasons. Two feature films followedThe X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008), but neither was particularly well received.

"There are times when I wish that I could separate and have a day where I'm not anxious about having to deliver the draft," Coogler said of his approach to The X-Files in a recent interview. "Vince [Gilligan] gave me a couple hours of advice over Zoom and answered all the questions I had – I've got them all in my notebook, and I go back to it often."

"I've been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it," he added. "You know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary." Addressing his desire to "make something really great," Coogler noted that he wanted to make "something for the real 'X-Files' fans" that would also "maybe find some new ones."

I like the idea this is just the FBI reopening the X-Files in the same universe with a new crew. Worth a shot! Let’s not pretend Coogler isn’t talented.

@bobevanz - What last reboot? X-Files has never been rebooted.

Even this Coogler version, it’s clearly a continuation.

Coogler has big CBM ties.

They should also bring Wonder Man, Mr. Terrific, and Hawkman in on this project.

Will they investigate the Epstein files and how every politician is implicated and comprised to follow the one country that must never be named? If not I don't care.

I had always thought the first movie was liked by many. The second one, not so much.

Will Coogler be directing every episode? Or, directing 1, 2, and maybe 3 before he assumes an “executive producer” role? I’m always down for new Scully and Mulder. However, I notice myself caring about the tone shifts between episodes since it’s different directors after the celebrity director does their little 1-2 episode thing. I HOPE Coogler would be directing every episode.
