The first theatrical poster for Alex Garland's (Dredd, Ex Machina) latest sci-fi movie, Annihilation, is now online, and it teases a perilous journey into the unknown for a group of intrepid scientists.

Natalie Portman (Black Swan, Thor, the Star Wars prequels) stars as Lena, a beleaguered woman who is tasked with exploring a beautiful but deadly contaminated area which has been taken over by a powerful force. There, she hopes to find out exactly what happened to her husband (Oscar Isaac), while being forced to contend with some lethal-looking creatures.

Annihilation is an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's novel, and also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tuva Novotny, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.

Kinda generic poster, but the movie itself looks pretty good.

Lethal-looking creatures giving his girlfriend trouble? Wait til Thor hears about this..
I read the books, and I don't want to give spoilers, but.... nope, I won't give away spoilers. Anyway, they say they didn't go exactly with the book, and that actually may be a good thing. I wasnt fond of how it deprived you of something that was happening to the character at times. I mean, there's something to be said for building up tension by hinting at what might be going on elsewhere, but when it's happening to the character him- or herself, but you aren't allowed to know because he or she is closing his eyes in fear.. and that's okay once or twice, but it happened a lot.

Also, the books were far too long, stretching unimportant details out for pages and pages.

@ImmovableForce - holy moly I had the same feeling about the books! So much build up to various situations and some didn’t pan out properly.

These books had so much more potential but felt like a let down in the end.

First saw this trailer during Star Wars and its concept really bothered me...Like nothing you send in there comes back except one military guy...and whats your next course of action? Lets send in another team...What could go wrong?

@BlackStar25 - Normally I’d recommend the book before seeing the movie but not so much in this case I’m afraid.

Also, it’s part of a trilogy so I f they’re doing book for book and this doesn’t do so well at the BO then the GA won’t know what the hells going on.

Seems so bland. Not sure if I'll be seeing this in theaters. I do like Portman though.

Can't wait for this! The cast and director are absolutely great. Just got the trilogy to read over x-mas break to read, love the premise.

Really don't get the Portman/Foster hate. She and Thor have a purely physical attraction in the first film, and she struggles to readjust back to normal mortal life in his absence. Then, when they finally get to spend some real time together, she realizes she was actually just excited by the magic he represents (and his abs) and they have an awkward off-screen break-up. Thor goes to live with Daryl in Australia and Jane goes back to her science. It feels very natural and organic to me, and sets up Jane as (the much more interesting) ex-girlfriend of Thor who is disenchanted about magic and superheroes and all that.

And I don't think there's anyone in Hollywood better suited to play the Pyrrhic cancer-battling magical-girl of Lady Thor than Portman. Breaking Bad meets Shazam meets No Sad Songs For Me. Shades of the Death of Captain Marvel, too.

The only real complaint I have is making her an astrophysicist instead of something with a bit more grit like a paramedic. I understand why for the sake of the first film, but made her just a slight bit more fluffy as a character.

Really wish I could get into a room with Feige, Portman, and Angelina Jolie to pitch them the project (Jolie to direct).

Nobody cares less about Oscars than me, but a tragic slow, lingering death of Jane Foster while living her final days as an Avenger is the kind of thing that could get them one.

"Tragical Girl"! Is that a thing? If that's a thing, then that's Jane.

@Spock0Clock - I couldn't agree more. I didn't really enjoy how the comic series was made, where the story went after the first arc, but I thought, against all odds, that Jane Thor was an amazing idea, and I really loved her personality and her design. I think it could make for a great, different and emotional movie, that if done right (balanced between her struggle as Jane and her responsibilities as Thor), could be THE superhero movie about a "strong female character" (that expression is cliché and overused but would then take all its meaning).

I just would give the movie to Lesli Linka Glatter, personally. She doesn't have any real big-screen experience, but what she did on ER, West wing, Mad Men or Homeland was really good. She knows how to write and direct mature, hard and relevant stories, a bit like Kathryn Bigelow. Susanne Bier as well could be great (plus she's worked with Tom Hiddleston before on The Night Manager, that's a perfect fit).

Things are gonna get awkward with two of Thor’s gfs, by I guess it won’t really be since nothing is confirmed with Thor and Valkyrie, although their is sexual tension, and also since Jane was the one that dumped Thor.
