UPDATED! Did John Hodgman Reveal The Role of Egon's Son in Ghostbusters 3?

This could be a spoiler if true. Hodgman was on "The Best Show" on WFMU and asked the audience to chime in on his dilemma to take on a major role in Ghostbusters 3.

If you were hypothetically offered a role in Ghostbusters 3... would you take the role? Let's say you're [playing] sort of the dissolute son of Egon, the Harold Ramis character, and you're kind of like John Candy in Splash, you're kind of a mess. But it turns out you're a natural ghost-whisperer, a natural psychic. But here's the thing: Bill Murray's not going to be in this movie, and probably not happy that you are. But you get to be in a major role, in a major movie and one of the greatest franchises of all time. Would you do it? - Transcribed by IO9.com

John Hodgman is best known as a hilarious correspondent for John Stewart's The Daily Show. He is also known as PC in his "I'm a PC and I'm a Mac" commercial with the actor Justin Long as his nemesis Mac.

This isn't the first time that Hodgman has been attached to Ghostbusters 3. In March of 2010 he and fellow actor, Patton Oswalt, stated that they wouldn't appear in the sequel, but maybe he is wavering.

The character profile sounds legit, and would fit pretty well in the storyline in my opinion. I think he would be a very good fit as Egon's son, and could pull off the role that he described. Hopefully he'll take on the role, and help make the sequel watchable even if Bill Murray doesn't contribute his talents.

You have it wrong. Hodgman is tied to "a Dan Aykroyd project" and asked Tom Scharpling, host of The Best Show if HE would be interested in the role as Ramis's son. This also makes much more sense, as Scharpling is a dead ringer for a younger, albeit rounder Harold Ramis.

Wait, how would this even work? Did Egon have a child that predated his GH days? I could see maybe his brother...or nephew, but son. No. I say they should get Cera and Jonah Hill. Jonah could be Venkman's kid and Cera could play Oscar. Works perfectly.

@superdog- True. Murray would at least have to make a cameo, otherwise I'd ignore the furthering of the franchise completely.

I could care less of Bill Murray came back. I mean, yeah, the guy MADE the movie. He owned that role, but Ghost Busters has been so close to me growing up and a big part of my childhood...I say just do it already. Reboot it. I don't care. There's a lot of actors who could play that same part: Ryan Reynolds, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudikus, Jason Bateman, etc etc etc

SERIOUSLY ALL THE ORIGINALS SHOULD JUST BE LIKE THE GRANDPAS THAT DID IT WAY BACK WHEN AND YOU SHOULD GET THEIR SONS TO REPRISE THE GHOSTBUSTING WITH TODAYS TECH...

RDJ SON OF VENKMAN...

ADRIEN BRODY SON OF EGON...

MICHAEL CERA SON OF SPENGLER...

AFFION CROCKETT NEPHEW OF ZEDDEMORE..

NEW SECRETARY KAT DENNINGS...

This guy is funny, but seems a bit old to play Egon's son. If they're going that rout, then they need someone younger.

There has to be something really stupid in what they are putting together that keeps Bill Murray from signing on. Maybe it is the fact that he doesn't think giving "powers" to there kids fits in with the Ghostbuster world. Could be he doesn't agree with using their offspring as the next generation of Ghostbusters. He could want more money or a bigger stake in the earnings even.

Who knows, but I do have faith that Bill has his reasons for steering clear of this project at this time. I know that Ramis and some of the other invovled in the original two have reached out to Bill, but I wonder what is holding him up from diving back into this world. The whole bit in Zombieland made me want to see him all the more in this.

@Gunsmith-Do you Mean Cera is Son of Stanz? Ray's kid? Cause otherwise he doesn't have a son you havea son of Egon adn a son of Spengler, and they're the same person. And that's pretty much the idea they're going for but without bloodties. Dan Aykroyd put it like this, "Egon is too big to fit in a harness, Ray has lost sight in one eye, and can't drive the Ecto-1 anymore, etc" so yeah they're going that route. I like your casting but take Cera out. If we're doing bloodties then Jonah hill as Son of Stanz.

DAMN YOU!
You beat me to the casting. He is PERFECT!!!

They look damn near identical, and he has that quirky kind of genius/loser/frequent masturbator look to him.

I could definitely see him playing like he was in Sorcerer's Apprentice...becoming kind of a badass and coming into his own in the end.

@GUNSMITH Uh, No...If you're going to use guys to play new ghostbusters you have to use new people/characters with no relations, period.
First of all, nobody in their right minds would believe these people are the sons of the original four. All of the people you have picked are too Goddamn old.

Robert Downey Junior?...Dude...I love him, too, but for the love of all of our brain cells, why? Furthermore, NO.

Adrien Brody(who is too old, period) and Michael Cera would have to be competing for the same role, according to your logic, because Egon's full name is "DR. EGON SPENGLER."...
I believe the role you were thinking of for Mr. Cera was Dr. Ray Stanz's son.

Affion Crockett............................
You...go and watch the movies again....RIGHT NOW YOUNG MAN!! rIGHT nOW! AND DON'T YOU DARE COME BACK UNTIL YOU CAN REMEMBER ALL OF THE ORIGINAL GHOSTBUSTER'S NAMES AND CAN QUOTE THREE LINES FROM THE MOVIES THAT AREN'T FROM THE "100 GREATEST MOVIE QUOTES OF ALL TIME," YOU HEAR ME?

Also, go back and watch a lot of the old ABC's The Real Ghostbusters 'toon episodes.

haha thanks! Honestly I really hope that Janine dumped Louis after the events of GB2 ( kind of like The real Ghostbusters ) Call me sappy , but I always felt they would end up together, and Jay Baruchel does look like their kid..I don't think Venkman would have a kid, but he would probably be Oscars Step dad, so Oscar doesn't have to even look like Venkman, just act like him. So for him I say Robert Sheenan from the Misfits, if he can hid his extreme Irishness that is. He does have the same playful humor and he is the right age.
