"Gareth Edwards' Godzilla 2014 reboot is set for a May 16th, 2014 release date. That's a little over a year away. Production officially kicks off next month and currently we've got only one confirmed cast member and two potential cast members still deciding on taking a role in the film. Here is what we know so far about Godzilla (2014):
Initially news had been very slow regarding Godzilla 2014 after the sneak peek at Comic-Con passed, with no online upload to be seen anywhere. Fans only got treated to one screenshot, taken during the sneak peek screening, which can be seen below:
Around December, a screenshot of a potential scene from the upcoming Godzilla 2014 trailer leaked online but we were requested by the originator of the content and the studio to remove it from our article. You can still find it online in various places however. It merely depicts a ravaged city, with a few people standing on an over turned building - the aftermath of Godzilla's morning stroll no doubt.
Moving along, that same month, we received official word that Godzilla 2014 would begin filming this March (2013) in Vancouver, Canada!
Following the news of Godzilla 2014's production start date, Godzilla comic book artist Matt Frank created a sketch of what he envisioned what the look of the new Godzilla would look like, based off of the Comic-Con footage screencap, shown above. You can check out his rendition below:
Following Matt Frank's Godzilla 2014 Godzilla design concept, talented fans from across the world started creating their own concepts for what the new Godzilla would look like. So far the only official Godzilla 2014 Godzilla design artwork seen online was a pitch, which was ultimately rejected and not used in the film. You can check it out below:
Throughout January, news on Godzilla 2014 started to heat up. The studio announced that the Godzilla project had hired a new writer, Frank Darabont to polish the original script, written by Max Borenstein.
We also received word that Aaron Johnson (Star of Kick Ass) was offered a role in the new Godzilla remake, but no official word yet on if Johnson will in fact take on the big G in 2014, as he's waiting to see the final, polished script before he makes a final decision.
Following word of Johnson's potential casting, news about the Monsters we will see in Godzilla 2014 arose, that there would be three Monsters in the film, including Godzilla which assist in destroying cities and charging the government a lot of money in resupplying their Military.
Things were looking great so far for the project until a huge legal feud war broke out between two of the film's Producers; Dan Lin, Roy Lee and the studio, Legendary. The feud resulted in a legal battle because apparently, neither of the parties could agree on a proper arrangement and Legendary was looking to trim off some of the Producers the film had already acquired over the years. In short, Legendary felt the duo mentioned above weren't pulling their weight and the duo in question wanted more money. But there's a lot more to it, so be sure to read it all yourself before making any judgments.
Thankfully however, this has apparently not stalled the production of the film and Godzilla 2014 has continued to move forward while the big boys duke it out behind the curtain.
Since then, things have progressed smoothly as we received more word on Godzilla 2014's casting situation, with Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen being considered for roles. Only recently, Olsen confirmed her role in Godzilla 2014 when she spoke about the project to a radio station, Absolute Radio. Elizabeth also reassured fans that the film would not be cheesy, or lighthearted at all, but a dark film, going back to Godzilla's roots. You can watch the video interview here.
So, in short, what do we know about Godzilla 2014? We know that Godzilla won't be lonely in the film and will be accompanied by not one, but two other Monsters, currently unknown. We know the script is being polished up and should be completed any time now, with production beginning in only a few weeks. We also now have one official cast member, Elizabeth Olsen on board to battle the giant lizard/dinosaur and we're still waiting on confirmation from Cranston and Jonhson to see whether or not they will be joining Ms. Olsen. Word on the Godzilla 2014 trailer is scarce and don't expect to see the Comic-Con footage any time soon. Those exclusive videos rarely ever make their way online."
