Will Smith & Michael B. Jordan Set To Star In & Produce I AM LEGEND Sequel

Things are about to get post-apocalyptic for Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, as it's being reported that the pair will star in & produce an upcoming sequel to the blockbuster I Am Legend for Warner Bros.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is in the very early stages of development on an I Am Legend sequel, with 4x Academy Award-nominee Will Smith (King RichardBad Boys for LifeSuicide Squad) set to return as Doctor Robert Neville and serve as a producer.

Primetime Emmy-nominee Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther; CreedWithout Remorse) is set to co-star and will also be a producer on a project. This will be his first time working with Smith in both capacities.

No director is currently attached, but in addition to Smith, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind; Cinderella Mani, Robot) is also returning to pen the new script.

Plot details are being kept under lock-and-key in the darkest corners on the Warner Bros. lot, but the development of this project and Smith's involvement are surely an unexpected surprise as, if you remember, his character Dr. Robert Neville sacrificed himself at the end of the theatrical cut of the original film. Whether he'll appear as a resurrected Darkseeker or be found alive somehow remains to be seen, but it'll certainly make for an interesting reveal if/when this movie arrives in theaters.

His character does survive in the film's alternate ending, so it's possible they could pick up the story after the director's cut and just formally retcon the theatrical version.

Smith has since confirmed the news and shared the following image:

I'm actually excited for this one. I remember watching a documentary a while back about Ridley Scott's I Am Legend film starring Arnold. Would've been pretty good. This time I do want to see more practical effects for the zombies or at least the up close scenes of them.

Secondly, I assume they'll be going with the ending from the alternate ending? Or Smith actually survived the explosion?

@TheRationalNerd -

I watched a YouTube video about it, the effects looked good from the test they did.
Shame it never happened, from what I remember the budget went high and no one talked in it for the first 40 minutes or so.

@TheRationalNerd - Oh dear god no. I can’t stand seeing another scene like in the first one. Specially after losing my best friend recently.

Most likely flash backs for will. Maybe it's a video journal he had.

Hope it's good. They should bring back the same director. He was great.

@AmazingFILMporg - probably not flashbacks. The original ending had Smith survive and that seems to be the canon ending.

Thought at first maybe this would be a sequel with Michael B. Jordan being a fellow colleague of Will Smith's character and they had a history back before the outbreak of that virus but it probably is something else.

I hope they come up with a good story because I am curious already.

I've been waiting on an I am legend sequel. Like porgy said it'll probably be flashbacks for will. I hope Mike B won't be a son of his or anything like that because obviously he wasn't around anyone.

Will deserves all the praise for I am legend though. It was one of his best performances

Something tells me this is something he’s been wanting to do with Jaden for a while and After Earth killed that idea.

Smith and MBJ is a pairing I didn't know I wanted, until now. Can't wait to watch them try to out-macho each other.

Didnt he die at the end of the first movie?
Anyway, stupid idea, a remake starring Michael B Jordan would've been a lot better idea, imo.

I remember being so confused when this scene was in the trailers, and then I saw the movie and it wasn't in there (keep in mind I was 10 at the time and wasn't aware of things like deleted scenes).

@MUTO123 - that’s the alternate ending aka the actual ending. Lots of version of the film have this replacing the ending of the theatrical cut because it’s vastly superior.

The book was so cool cause it was actually about vampires. I remember one part where he’s holed up in his house or something and he can hear his neighbor who is a vampire just calling his name over and over again.

@Stinkor1 -

I loved the book when I read it as well.
The part with the neighbors was one of my favourite bits as it showed the Vampires were sentient.
Also what an ending, the title made much more sense that way
Really hope we get a TV adaption one day that's a lot closer to the book

First one was pretty good so long as you watch it with the REAL ending and not the theatrical one. I like how most dvd and blue rays came with the option to watch the film with that ending. It’s literally the crux of the whole story.

Not sure how a sequel would work…
