Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is in the very early stages of development on an I Am Legend sequel, with 4x Academy Award-nominee Will Smith (King Richard; Bad Boys for Life; Suicide Squad) set to return as Doctor Robert Neville and serve as a producer.
Primetime Emmy-nominee Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther; Creed; Without Remorse) is set to co-star and will also be a producer on a project. This will be his first time working with Smith in both capacities.
No director is currently attached, but in addition to Smith, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind; Cinderella Man; i, Robot) is also returning to pen the new script.
Plot details are being kept under lock-and-key in the darkest corners on the Warner Bros. lot, but the development of this project and Smith's involvement are surely an unexpected surprise as, if you remember, his character Dr. Robert Neville sacrificed himself at the end of the theatrical cut of the original film. Whether he'll appear as a resurrected Darkseeker or be found alive somehow remains to be seen, but it'll certainly make for an interesting reveal if/when this movie arrives in theaters.
His character does survive in the film's alternate ending, so it's possible they could pick up the story after the director's cut and just formally retcon the theatrical version.
Smith has since confirmed the news and shared the following image:
