THE AMAZING
SPIDER-MAN
ISSUE 018
The last issue ended with a rather unexpected twist, the Ghost (Industrial saboteur) decided to do a bit of a Harrison Wells. If you've seen CW's The Flash you'll know hat I mean, he put his hand into Sajini's chest to stop her heart, but luckily our favourite webhead was able to arrive just in time to stop him...kinda. Seeing as the Ghost can move through matter as easy as just walking Spideys attempts at stopping him are futile, not for lack of trying. Sajini may be lucky enough to get away with heart murmurs, but the explosives set in place by the Ghost blow up Parker Industries, but not without making a terrible business pun.
First Page, Second Page & Third Page
Anna Maria lead the remaining Parker Industries employees out of the building through Peters' private lab, herself and the now reformed villain Clayton decide to use the inventions intended to help aid Spider-Man to combat the Ghost. I really am impressed by the level of complexity to the inventions, even a few nods back to older ones such as the Big Time suit. I would really like to see a fully teched out Spidey in a issue..before he is killed off in Secret Wars.
Fourth Page & Fifth Page
Spider-Man and the Ghost still fought in the lower levels of Parker Industries, just as it looked like Spidey was going to catch a break the Ghost brought the rest of the building down upon him, somehow managing to overload his spidey sense too. Now I fully understand the need to put our hero in some form of danger, in this case trapped in debris, but are we seriously supposed to accept that a falling building is enough to fool Spider-Mans Spidey sense...As things looked bleak for Spidey Anna Maria and her rag tag crew of heroes showed up to save him, I really do love the look of those fire-webs.
Sixth Page, Seventh Page & Eighth Page
The Ghost was secured as a "unappetizing burrito" and all danger seemed to be behind them, except for the collapsing building. The impending collapse of the building clearly put Spidey on edge, he even went as far as calling Anna Maria and Clayton his "Amazing Friends" which is a reference to a Spider-Man show from the 70's. But can you really blame him, in his weakened state he probably couldn't save everyone if the whole building were to collapse there and then. As usual Anna Maria covers Spider-Man and Peters ass by giving him his civilian clothes, I have said it once and I'll say it again...Anna Maria is far too convenient.
Ninth Page & Tenth Page
All of the Parker Industries employees made it out of the building safely, and so did Anna Maria, Clayton and Sajini...but Sajini decided that she would shout at Peter due to him still working with Spider-Man...just as things looked like they couldn't get any worse the full structure of Parker Industries collapsed and the morale of the employees severely dropped. This forced Peter to deliver an awe inspiring speech, which ultimately served no real purpose...
Eleventh Page, Twelfth Page & Thirteenth Page
My Overall View
With the Black cat story arcs currently taking up the back portion of the issues there is not much Spider-Man content to look at, but I'm not complaining as they make for a good read, as well as informing us the reader how she is rebuilding her criminal empire. But that is not the interesting part in all of this, in this issue Spider-Man was rendered powerless by falling debris. Now my first thought was lazy writing, but the events of Spider-Verse (when he got his life force drained) may still be affecting him. This could be very bad news in the long run because with Secret Wars just around the corner we need our Spider-Man to be at full strength. The artwork for this issue was fantastic as always, but the main story was lacking, Anna Maria is now just a character used to make Peters life easier and she is seemingly convenient. Someone will figure out that she knows and it ill put her at risk..that reminds me...where the hell is Norman Osborn? Surely he is not sitting back as Black Cat rules the crime Syndicate..same for the Kingpin...Unless Slott is planning to have both Norman and Kinpin work together to take down Spider-Man using Black Cat as a front for their nefarious plots.
