Tom Holland Wants To Adapt The Clone Saga In Spider-Man 5 — Here's Why It Needs To Happen

Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland recently expressed his admiration for the Ultimate version of The Clone Saga, and we're now exploring why that's the perfect story to adapt for Spider-Man 5.

The late 90s weren't a great time for the comic book industry, either creatively or in terms of sales. Marvel Comics was on the brink of bankruptcy, and in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, it sometimes felt as though the publisher had gone creatively bankrupt.

Through a highly convoluted series of events, Peter Parker discovered that he was a clone and that the real Peter, now going by Ben Reilly, had spent five years on the road, pursued by another twisted doppelganger, Kaine. Peter stepped away to spend more time with his wife, Mary Jane, and the baby she was carrying, leaving Ben—who went by "Scarlet Spider" for a time—to resume being Spider-Man.

Fans rejected the change (unwilling to accept this new Spider-Man and that the past five years had been stories revolving around a clone), leading to a retcon where Peter was confirmed as the real deal. As for Ben, he turned to dust.

Tom Holland recently expressed his fandom of the Ultimate Clone Saga, a similar story that makes some changes for the better and some for the worse. The actor would like to adapt elements from that down the line, and we'd suggest turning to the original tale and focusing on the following points to deliver a Spider-Man movie like no other...

5. At Its Core, The Clone Saga Is A Great Story

2243519 xl copy

The Clone Saga features some dreadful moments. Those included the apparent kidnapping/death of baby May Parker, pretty much everything with Judas Traveller, and the many times the story became almost unbearably muddled as Marvel Comics attempted to figure out what the heck it was doing.

Take all that aside, though, and the idea of a resurrected Green Goblin enacting his revenge on Peter by making him doubt his own existence through The Jackal's cloning experiments is an effective hook. As a whole, the premise was great; the execution, however, was often flawed.

The horror of learning that he's a clone so soon after his Aunt May's death breaks Peter, and when Marvel Comics eventually course-corrected, his journey to establishing that he was the real Spider-Man made for thrilling reading. Of course, as all this was happening, we got to spend time with Ben Reilly...

4. Ben Reilly's Story Arc

brsm2022001 cvr

As much as fans didn't want Ben to take Peter's place, it was a blast discovering how he'd spent his five years away from New York. Then, when he returned and became the Scarlet Spider, we got to spend time with a very different Spider-Man who had to rediscover his responsibility.

Eventually becoming the official Spider-Man, Ben took on all manner of threats and developed a bond with Peter that saw them consider each other brothers. He'd even make the ultimate sacrifice for his "clone," only to eventually be resurrected by The Jackal years later.

More than two dozen deaths and resurrections pushed Ben into madness. Fortunately, he found redemption and became Spider-Man again...only to lose many of Peter's formative memories and become the villainous Chasm. Not everything here worked, but enough did to make Ben a fascinating character in his own right (and a hero whose story deserves to be told).

3. Tom Holland Can Pull Double Duty

So, how can this storyline be brought into the MCU? It goes without saying that a lot of changes should be made, both to improve on the source material and to make it fit into this live-action franchise.

The prospect of Tom Holland playing Peter Parker and Ben Reilly is hugely exciting to us, especially if the latter has the same baggage as his comic book counterpart. Ben isn't just Peter with blonde hair, and exploring the emotional complexities of these characters as they argue over who is "real" and the mental toll doubting their entire reality takes on them would allow Holland to excel.

Miles Morales could come into play somewhere, and we'd love to see Sony take the actor's advice by introducing Jessica Drew. In the Ultimate Universe, she's the female clone of Peter Parker, and given that they're non-identical, she would be a great role for a rising star actress.

2. ...Or Make That Triple Duty

kaine unmasked

Kaine is a failed Peter Parker clone who descends into madness and villainy after being left horribly scarred and in constant pain. He'd eventually see the error of his ways and, through a set of typically convoluted circumstances, become the hardened, badass Scarlet Spider.

Given that Kaine is an imperfect clone, another actor could step in to lead a spin-off franchise, though we'd love to see what Holland could do as this villain. However, he's also far from the only threat that we'd like to see step into the wall-crawler's world from this era.

There's the duplicitous Seward Trainer, his daughter Carolyn—the new female Doctor Octopus—and obviously The Jackal himself. Obsessed with Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, the college professor is a twisted psychopath who'd benefit from a present-day makeover without the '90s cheesiness.

1. The Green Goblin's Return

In some ways, Marvel Studios has already laid the groundwork for The Clone Saga. Aunt May's death has seen Peter fully embrace being Spidey, and the mystery of the hero's origin story surely opens the door to some sort of cloning reveal or connection.

Crucially, the MCU's Spider-Man has crossed paths with the Green Goblin. Whether Willem Dafoe's Variant somehow influenced Earth-616's Norman Osborn or the MCU finds another way to bring the Green Goblin back, revealing him as the mastermind behind the Clone Saga would be significant. Anything is possible after Avengers: Secret Wars.

In the comics, we learned that he wanted to destroy Peter in revenge for his son's death and orchestrated the entire Clone Saga to do so. Returning to New York, he engaged both Spider-Men in battle, leading to Ben throwing himself in front of the Goblin's glider to save Peter. He then crumbled to dust, confirming he was the clone all along. That was quite the shocker at the time and would be amazing to see on screen.

Do you think The Clone Saga should be adapted for the MCU? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Yeah, but with one slight change. The clone should be Black, Tom Holland should play him too, and his name should be Miles Morales.

@TheRevelation - Exactly. A panel-for-panel translation rarely works on screen because comic books and 2-hour movies tell stories in completely different ways. The MCU has always taken the core spirit of a storyline and adapted it to fit a bigger cinematic arc—look at Civil War or Infinity War. If an adaptation fixes bad pacing or streamlines bloated lore, that's good filmmaking, not a betrayal.

Been saying forever that the Clone Saga should be the 6th and final film for Tom Holland and that Scarlet Spider should be one of the clones and also somehow Miles gets his powers and somehow Peter loses his powers for good and Miles takes over as the MCU Spider-Man and the main villains of the movie should be Kingpin, Alastair Smythe, and the Jackal.

soberchimera - 9/29/2026, 12:41 PM
@KineticAce - And we should only see each for a few seconds in a montage sequence.

The Clone saga and replacing Peter with Miles are horrible ideas that could kill the golden goose that is Spider-Man.

After another couple of movies recast Peter Parker again. And add Miles, but DON’T dump Peter.

Having Peter return from Secret Wars with the goo for a 2 part epic Peter Parker Spider-Man vs Eddie Brock Venom is what needs to happen.

Spike101 - 9/29/2026, 3:11 PM
@DocSpock - again we are on the same page! Why would they in their right minds ever try that when there are so many brilliant legacy characters to explore, let alone do a team with Daredevil or the Human Torch which is what everyone wants. Take a couple of classic villains and do it properly.
DocSpock

@Spike101 -

Plus at the end of SW I’d like to see Norman Osborne strong arming Manhattan. And when the frick will we see Black Cat??

BiffDitko - 9/29/2026, 12:51 PM
A thoughtful argument.
Having read these issues as these transpired, it felt as if Marvel just threw up their hands and said "OK, how about NORMAN OSBORNE comes back?" When that was literally NEVER THE PLAN, it juat got THAT out of hand that they did something DESPERATE. And it actually WORKED.
Maybe it's 1990s Marvel Fan PTSD, but the idea of the Spider-Man movies taking on the "Clone Saga" gives me horrible vibes.
Not saying they couldn't pull it off, but as someone who owns about 40 YEARS worth of Spider-Man comics, "The Clone Saga" feels like that terrible Ex that texts you at 3 in the morning.
Nothing good can come of this...

@BiffDitko - I really wish Marvel, and a few other big name IP's would lean into horror a bit more. Abeloth. Morlun. Plenty of good stories to chase if you're not chasing solely that PG-13 market.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 9/29/2026, 4:17 PM
@TheRevelation - Tbh, I would LOOOOOVE a live action Morlun. They want to introduce Miles?
That's the way to go.
If they REALLY want to lean into "The Spider-verse" then Morlun and his family could really be a way into that.
I think "The Other" is one of the BEST New Spider-Man comic storylines out there. That and "Superior Spider-Man" those storylines REALLY pulled me back in.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 9/29/2026, 4:21 PM
@TheRevelation - Which is HILARIOUS bc "The Clone Saga" really turned me off from the Spidey books. So "The Other" story is the one that hooked me back in. Which set up "Civil War" and then "Back In Black" but then..."One More Day" 🤮🤮 lol

Didn't have to read all the details of the article to agree with this as a great story to adapt. It got confusing at times in the books but the mystery over who's the real Peter is great. I hope they can still use the Ben Reilly name. And this story would be a true ground level story not requiring any big hitter guest stars like Hulk in BND. A scientist perhaps like Reed or they could reintroduce Curt Conners.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 9/29/2026, 12:59 PM
@hue66 - I hope that if they somehow do the whole Symbiote thing in SW that Reed DOES help Peter like he did in the comics.

It could work. I mean, instead of The Jackal, they could just have Damage Control trying to make their own Spider-Man.

@bobevanz - It "could" be done in one film provided it was done like the TWO original clone issues in the 70s. Anything after that goes off the rails.
Huskers
Huskers - 9/29/2026, 1:04 PM
Nooooo!!! It was bad enough we didn’t have a villain in this last one and the whole thing was just a big set up for the X-Men! Besides, we already had 3 Peter Parker’s onscreen!
hue66
hue66 - 9/29/2026, 2:06 PM
@Huskers - Forgot about that. But this is really a totally different story than having 3 different Peters from 3 different universes getting along and more directly impacts the main universes Spiderman. Besides there is a villian in the story.

Please no! How about we get an MCU Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Sandman, etc…. Plus, like someone already stated, we already have two Spider-Man variants. I’d rather they reappear than clones.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/29/2026, 1:27 PM
Honestly , i feel the Clone Saga is too much for one film and I don’t think they would nor would I want them to use multiple movies to tell this story while you could do other villains etc…

The only reason I would even want to see this is just to watch Tom Holland act against himself which i think would be fun but otherwise , I would rather their energies be put towards other ideas for Spider Man 5.

User Comment Image

However if they somehow do it , I can see them mixing the Ultimate & 616 versions by having Dr Miles Warren (who becomes the Jackal later in the film or in a future appearance) being hired to create super soldiers for shadowy government people like Doc Ock was in the former by using Peter’s DNA due to the blood he spilled in the DODC facility hence him creating the clones which could be Ben Reilly , Kaine and Jessica Drew.

Anyway we’ll see but i still would rather we just get Hobgoblin in the next!!.

The clone saga started in ‘94 and was predominantly published across 95-96, so I don’t know if you can call this a “late 90s” story. It’s more mid. Just like the story itself.

Hell , make Tombstone the big bad and Scorpion his right hand as revenge against Spidey.

Maybe even Tombstone can hire Alistair Smythe to create a Spider Slayer to kill Spider Man!!.
