Donald Glover On Not Playing Spider-Man!

Donald Glover On Not Playing Spider-Man!

The actor talks about his disappointment about not getting the part he campaigned for and reveals whether he was actually ever contacted by Marc Webb or Sony...

A few months ago, the actor started an online campaign to gain support for him to get the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Thankfully, he failed. In the following interview, Glover talks more about that failure and reveals that he was never actually contacted by anyone from Sony.

On Whether He Was Upset That Andrew Garfield Got The Part:

"No, not at all. I think he fits pretty good. I think he fits the role really well and I’m really excited. I’m upset about people saying, 'Donald, you too old.' And I’m like, 'Andrew Garfield’s older than me and nobody was upset.' But I’m not upset about the choice, I think it’s going to be great, honestly. I’m just mad at hypocrites in general."

On Whether Sony Or Marc Webb Ever Contacted Him:

"No, it was never really a thing. I think they had heard about it, but it was never really one of those things. You don’t want to get, like, forced into a position or anything like that. I was very flattered by everybody being behind me and everybody supporting me. That was really cool, but I never really wanted to force anybody’s hands or anything like that. They’re a big corporation. They can make their own decisions about what they want to do, and it’s their money."

On Whether He'd Like To Play Another Superhero In Future:

"But it definitely got me thinking, if people want me to play a superhero, maybe I should try and get involved in a superhero thing."

This again?

Nobody is upset with Garfield being to old? He's not paying attention.

Rather than making an actual comment to get me labeled as racist or not racist, I'll just take the racist label now. It seems like the easiest position to defend. you can't prove an absolute negative, right? i.e., I have no racist thoughts/motivations/tendencies?

If only Andrew Garfield was a little younger than that would be great, I support a African American spider-man but spidey's supposed to be white, I'm not racist or anything, I hope to see him as another Superhero one day

[frick] Ed Norton. Err...I mean the reboot! :P

I'm sorry, but there are just some things you can and cant do and changing a major character like Spider-Man's race is one of the things you cant and shouldnt do. If that makes me a racist then this is a sad world we live in.

Guys, check out my INCEPTION review! Just click the link! :)

@MASS
Once again you and I agree! Just because you (and myself)hated the idea of this guy playing Pete DOES NOT make us, or anyone for that matter, racist. I'm just a HUGE spider-man fan, I have about 30 years worth of ASM, and 3 Spidey tattoos too(one of them being of peter parker). Glover is a good actor, and has a GREAT sense of humor. He is NOT a good choice for Spider-Man because, yes HE'S BLACK. For me that's too much of a DRASTIC change. A long time ago the studios were flirting with the idea of having Sharon Stone play James Bond. Yes, it's true. They just thought it would be a good idea to shake things up and be different. Good thing they came to their senses because as we all know, JAMES bond is a MAN. What I'm getting at is sometimes characters have been around TOO long to shake things up simply for the sake of being different. I would have felt the same way if Will Smith ended up playing Steve Rogers. I'll be REALLY pissed if someone like Duane Johnson ends up playing Luke Cage too.
As for Garfield I am TOTALLY fine with it. If they move him to college fine. He's a FANTASTIC actor and from what I've gathered about the script this movie will be much closer to the real spirit of spidey. Have faith!

@Superzero - Holy crap! Sharon Stone as Bond?!? Would the character still have been a WOMANIZER?!? It boggles the mind...and possibly other anatomy!

Also, your argument is right, but we've seen where that leads on past boards. That's why I'm just going to go with the "I'm a racist" thing. It makes the conversations shorter and its what some people are going to assume anyway.

@ Superzero and Massexexcutions:

True. But all the black racists, white guilties, race baiters, libnazis, and ethnocentricists that go around opportunistically looking for someone to call racist don't see it that way, and never could.

To them, if you EVER say anything against any black person even if it's the truth it's racism.

For example: OJ is a murderer = racism
Micheal was a freak of nature and a child molester = racism

etc, etc

LEE: Lol, cheers for the extra pimping bud! :D (and dont forget to check out ROR's a few articles under this one guys!) I honestly dont care about Norton though to be honest...he was a decent enough Bruce Banner but there are plenty of other actors out there who can do just as good a job, if not a better one, than him IMO!

@ MassExecutions: I remember that. Very very true.

It's kind of a luck of the draw it seems. It all depends on WHO sees the comment.

I have heard one person say that there is racism all over this web site, but personally I have only seen the real deal like one time in two years.

Hey! Juggernaut Michael Jackson only started child molesting as a white man :P

Seriously though I think we can all see that Spidey should be white. People are too sensitive these days

Anyways if you have to put a qualifier before your statement you most probably are about to say something stupid/racist/homophobic/sexist etc.

@ISAIAH
Now THAT would be a perfect fit!
As for all of this "boycott Avengers because Edward-I-think-I'm-the-shit-Norton is not playing Banner" Really? You're NOT going to see AVENGERS because a studio of Professional movie makers decided to replace the only actor who caused problems in the last film they did with him as opposed to investing MILLIONS of dollars in a VERY high profile ENSEMBLE film only so he can act like a primadonna and possibly screw up their investment? THAT'S the reason you're NOT going to see AVENGERS???!! Jesus people PLEASE! Anyone who comes on this site in the FIRST place will be in the theaters opening day for ANYthing comic related! Green Lantern's costume is CGI: Boycott! Spider-Man ReBoot: Boycott! We haven't seen a pic of Thor in a Helmet: Boycott! Ughh! Can't we just revel and enjoy the fact that we HAVE the chance to SEE high profile movies like these? I do! I'm 30 and have been collecting comics for 28 years, as a collector and all around geek I'm just thankful I can pay to see any of these movies. If they suck then they suck. Big deal! I mean THEY. ARE. MAKING. AN. AVENGERS. MOVIE. That sentence enough is enough to make me happy! Sorry for the rant. I need to lay off the Red Bull. LOL.
JonF
JonF - 7/16/2010, 1:52 PM
@Juggernaut - The main point is that switching character's races is just a bad idea! This tactic is a transparent, shameless attempt to both shock and placate; a cheap way to gain attention! All it does is ruin the character for those who've been following the source material and are looking forward to seeing an accurate portrayal of their favorite character onscreen!

Nick Fury should not be black, Luke Cage should not be white and Iron Fist should not be Asian! The reason this has become such a hot button issue lies in the fact that in the past, white actors were typically used to portray characters of other ethnicities, thus blackballing minority actors from working in the film industry(i.e., Liz Taylor in "Cleopatra", or white actors playing Indians)!
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 7/16/2010, 1:53 PM
@Superzero - To quote myself:

No fanboy worth his salt will be able to boycott this film. They could use a crew entirely composed of 3rd world child laborers and serve the actors bald eagle for breakfast and condor for lunch and I STILL couldn't keep myself away.

@jjmeyler Yea but im 21 bro and I play/audition for 15 yr olds all the time. it depends on your demographics. And your point is accurate yet moot because, Alex is 15 but looks 18 in the comics. But i get what u mean.
