James Mangold is entering the final stages of work on The Wolverine. Why was Mark Waid not compensated for Man of Steel's use of Birthright? Foxx and Tatum discuss their upcoming blockbusters and which veteran voice-actors are returning for Transformers 4?

According to director James Mangold, The Wolverine is currently receiving its last finishing touches.

Mark Waid explains why even though Man of Steel borrows heavily from Birthright, his name doesn't appear in the credits.
".....By way of example, let’s take Impulse, a character I co-created with artist Mike Wieringo. Mike and I signed a contract that grants us a small percentage of all revenue DC might earn off Impulse action figures, merchandise, guest-starring roles on Young Justice or Smallville, what have you. It’s hardly buy-a-boat money; I get maybe a couple hundred bucks off of every action figure (because of the equity deal) and a few cents off every trade paperback collection or digital sale (because of the royalty agreement), but it adds up and I do see something, enough for a nice meal every few months. And that’s the deal I agreed to at the time, and that’s fine. But that’s the limit of DC’s legal, contractual obligation to us......." You can check out the full post over at his blog, Thrillbent.

Jaime Foxx and Channing Tatum discussed their respective forthcoming blockbusters Jupiter Ascending and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Collider while doing press for White House Down [Incidentally, I saw White House Down at a screening, very funny and entertaining].

Peter Cullen and Frank Weller discuss Michael Bay's Transformers 4 with IGN.

Peter Cullen: I’m always fascinated by the design changes because what could be more realistic in something that transforms than change itself? Cars change every year. They come off the designing tables, the clay models, and before you know it , you’ve got a brand new look to a car. I like it that way. I’m excited to find out what Mr. Bay is going to do for the next look, you know? Because after all, he’s always going to look like that. [Points to the Optimus statue on top of the ride]. He’s always going to transform into something that’s pretty close to that!

Frank Welker: Yet to be determined [whether I return to voice a character in Transformers 4]. I’m not sure. I did the last two [Editor's note: While Welker doesn't voice Megatron in the films, he has voiced Soundwave, Ravage and Devastator, among other characters], but waiting to see. I usually won’t know until the very end, but I’m really looking forward to see what Michael [Bay] does. As you know, he always outdoes himself. He’s got big shoes to fill -- his own shoes -- so it’ll be a lot of fun to see what he comes up with. And of course, Peter’s always fantastic. And we have this ride to work on together and it’s a blast. I really enjoyed doing that.

James Mangold seems to have got something special with The Wolverine. I think it is going to surprise everyone. The Wolverine for #CBMofTheYear!

@ALmight I can't man! Wolverine is my favorite hero and I'm just too excited at the prospect of him finally getting a great solo movie. Plus, Mangold's insistence on studying Wolverine as a person as opposed to just having him stab people gives me hope.

I think Mark Waid is a little bitch. Pissing and moaning about Superman killing Zod, when he did just that in the comics many years back. Just because Waid wrote a great arc in Birthright, doe's not make him the end all be all authority on Supermans moral compass. Many writers have tackled Supes and put different spins on him.

Of course I know Supes has an aversion to killing, but that aversion had to come from somewhere. I guarantee you wont see Supes kill anyone else in further MOS films, and it will no doubt be tied back to his remembrance of killing Zod. That could make for some great moments for the character in the future.

Why would Wolverine need a suit? Who would he be hiding his identity from? The suit was and will always be pointless.

The GA are idiots? Really? Not everyone goes to a film expecting The Godfather. They go to a film trying to enjoy a action blockbuster. That what the TF series provide. Stop being so naive.

@ALmight Sorry about your MOS disappointment. People were pumping it up to be the best CBM of all time and it turned out to just be good. Not that being just good is bad, but I can see how people were disappointed.

You really are dumb, aren't you? Wolverine suit is not as iconic as Superman, GL,WW, Batman, flash, or Spider-Man. Superman suit represents hope, GL suit gives you a sense to overcome fear, Batman suit is to protect people around him, same goes to Spider-Man and Flash except Flash suit gives him a increase in his powers, and WW suit represents being a warrior, a fighter, and a god...not to mention its tradition in her culture. Now after all that, what does Wolverine suit represents/means? NOTHING. Point blank.

MOS is NOT Birthright! Birthright Superman is an amalgamation of Smallville and Richard Donner films. I own the complete issues of the series and it's nothing like Man of Steel.

Man of Steel isn't inspired by Birthright.

Mark Waid really needs to shut up about his dislike of the film. We get it. Enough already.

Mainstream superhero comics have always had a disaster porn element to them. Just flip through some of them and watch how much of the city gets destroyed by the villains like Doomsday messed up Metropolis.

I mean...doesn't Galactus eat worlds?
The Anti-Monitor destroy them?

Please.

First time I actually agreed with you.

Something's wrong with me? This is coming from a (presumably) guy who prefers to watch a man running a round with a yellow spandex outfit on. Even though I loved the costumes in Man of Steel, Russel Crowe looked disturbingly awkward in the spandex without the armor. Now imagine that on Hugh Hackman but the spandex Is yellow. Not a good sight, is it?

Mark Waid is entitled to payment and credit ONLY if he created the character, He didn't create Superman so that's why he doesn't get a credit its as simple as that. You don't see frank miller complaining because his name didn't appear at the end of batman begins for using scenes taken from Batman Year One. Also Waid is entitled to his opinion about the movie, but honestly it doesn't matter. I thought Birthright wasn't that great and I feel like he is being too whiny about supes snapping zod's neck. Superman had no choice so it had to be done. I mean he's done it before in Superman 2 and the comics and he will do it ONLY AS A LAST RESORT. Why don't people complain this hard whenever batman offed Joker in the Tim Burton movies or rhas or two face? I swear, sometimes I think when it comes to superman people will find anything to criticize and hate on only because its Superman

Ok, now I see where you're coming from. I understand you want some type of resmbalance of his suit, but it most likely will not happen. The closest you're going to get is the leather suits from the trilogy. Sorry bud, just the way things are.

Name one thing Waid created in Man of Steel.

Nothing? Yep, then he gets nothing.

It's not like Dixon, Wein, and Nolan who got money for the Batman movies, given that they created actual characters in the movies (Bane and Lucious Fox). Waid and Morrison already got paid for Birthright and All-Star Superman, so that's it.

Note: George Perez got six figures last year just for Teen Titans, which makes sense since they're hugely popular on TV and George co-created Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven.

Imagine when the JL movie hits, of which Cyborg is a confirmed member. He and Wolfman are gonna get paid.

Did anyone else read Peter Cullen's comments in the voice of Optimus Prime? So interesting to think about Peter's range of voice acting...the man was the voices of several characters in Voltron, Rainbow Bright, Heathcliff, GoBots, GI Joe, Gremlins, Eeyor in Winnie the Pooh movies, and even did the Predator's voice.

The man represents everything from mine and my 2 sisters' childhoods.

I guess they are just trying to make Wolverine look... I dunno...NOT ridiculous. They are already behind the eight-ball with that silly hair, no way are they going to put Jackman in costume. Seriously, search the net for any pics of live Wolvie costumes and try to find one that looks any good. You can't, because they don't exist.

Man of Steel references 'Birthright' but it is in no way note for note Birthright.

Anyway, no one cares about Lego Head(Channing Tatum) and his movie, he's a bland boring crappy actor. I'm eager to see with what TASM 2 does with the round up of character's with in the movie, hopefully it wont be a clusterfrick.

The only interesting thing about T4 is 'Marky Mark'.

Apart from Clark traveling the globe...I didn't see any of Birthright in MoS....and the travelling the globe in birthright wasn't a new idea...

I thought MoS was more based on John Brynes 'Man of Steel' so I'm not surprised he didn't get any royalties...

@SuperSomething616

Thank you. I've said this before and glad someone else thinks the same. Watching MoS the first time there were a number of times Brynes Superman era came to mind. I've always found Waid to come across as a pretty nice guy (on DVD extras etc) but I've lost any respect for him now he's behaving like a spoilt brat.Birthright was good by it wasn't as great as he thinks it is.
