Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back a lot of familiar faces from the franchise's past, though there was seemingly no room for love interests. Prior to the threequel's release, there had been rumours that we'd see Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson again, and while the actress denied plans for any sort of cameo, she did express interest in reprising the role.
Talking to People following her SAG Awards nomination for The Power of the Dog, Dunst was asked if she's seen the wall-crawler's latest movie yet.
"I haven't. I'm sorry!" she laughed. "I know I have to. I know [SPOILER ALERT!] Tobey's in it and it's such a huge surprise and everyone's freaking out. I will. I'll eventually watch it. You know, I'll watch it with my son, because he's starting to get into Spider-Man stuff. There's, like, a little-kid version of Spider-Man that he watches, so maybe he'll watch it with me."
"It's such a cool legacy to be a part of, and to be the first one and be a Spider-Man fan," Dunst said of the historic franchise. "I feel like that's a really special thing because these fans have lived with these movies for so long and have grown up with it. It's legacy things that feel really exciting. It's nice to be excited about something. All of us are dealing with so much right now."
"It's nice to have people want to go to the movie theater and see something that really makes their heart happy. I saw a reaction video [from a No Way Home screening] that someone sent me and I was like, 'Oh my God!' People really needed this right now — more than ever."
As for whether she'd be open to playing Mary Jane down the line, Dunst once again shared an enthusiastic response to the possibility. "Of course I would. Of course. I've been asked about that a few times. That's a no-brainer. That was a huge part of my career and my life."
With so much excitement surrounding the returning Spider-Men, now might be a good time to return to the world inhabited by Tobey Maguire's web-slinger to see what exactly his happy ending with MJ looks like. Hopefully, that will happen somewhere down the line; as of right now, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a strong possibility, but who knows what Sony has planned!
What would you like to see from this version of MJ if she were to show up in a future movie?
