SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Re-Release Actually Ended Up Finishing Third At Labor Day Weekend Box Office

Sony Pictures may have released a "More Fun Stuff Version" of Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters over Labor Day weekend, but reports that it webbed its way back to #1 were a tad premature. Check it out!

Over the weekend, all signs pointed to Spider-Man: No Way Home swinging back to the top of the North American box office. Billed as "The More Fun Stuff Version" of the blockbuster, it included an additional 11 minutes of footage. However, with relatively little marketing, a lack of buzz, and scenes that weren't that good, the movie ended up underperforming.

In fact, Deadline reports that Top Gun: Maverick gunned the wall-crawler down, shooting its way back to the #1 spot with $7.9 million.

Bullet Train ended up exceeding expectations with a solid $7.33 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, leaving Spider-Man: No Way Home to web up $6.55 million for third place. Most surprising, however, is that the biggest movie of 2021 only just managed to beat DC League of Super-Pets' $6.365 million!

It feels like Sony Pictures really dropped the ball here, failing to build excitement for Spider-Man's return to theaters. However, it's feasible the studio was aware that the extra footage wasn't anything to write home about (some fans have started referring to it as the "Betty Cut" thanks to scenes blatantly recycled from the movie's TikTok account).

As you might imagine, Paramount Pictures is very happy with this result.

"It’s without a doubt, that Top Gun: Maverick is a true cultural touchstone embodying the power of the cinematic experience," studio President and CEO Brian Robbins says. "As we celebrate this enormous achievement and the film’s massive impact, we want to extend our gratitude to Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, Paramount’s marketing and distribution teams, and the legions of both new and longtime Top Gun fans who keep turning out to enjoy this remarkable movie."

It's really not the end of the world that Spider-Man: No Way Home's re-release failed to set the box office on fire. Sony is likely to be disappointed, and whether it was worth holding these deleted scenes back from the Blu-ray is up for debate (especially as that led to a lot of negative backlash from fans).

What did you head to theaters to watch this weekend?

@HWestRE420 - EXACTLY. I inadvertently own this movie already and had zero plans on going to go see it again. I could care less what Pete & Pete(that should be worth 25 points for the early 90’s reference) did when they went back home.

@regularmovieguy - Did you watch NWH this weekend?

@WruceBayne - If they didn't add it in the first time where it was just worthy as deleted footage...then it should of just been that. I really think people saw it just to bring their little kids to watch it maybe. Just for the downtime.

Wait a minute, so this was Sony’s fault that this cash grab failed to be number 1 at the box office? If that’s the case, was it because of Sony that it made a billion dollars the first go round?

@TheWalkingCuban - If these movies continue to be made and then redistributed, how am I supposed to get my inevitable reboot and massive crossover of Murder She Wrote, The Golden Girls and Matlock? It’s just madness.

@WruceBayne - Having the Matlock music stuck in my head is no bad thing, thank you sir, and might I add, in the heat of the night and mamas’s family.

@TheWalkingCuban - you’re telling me that you would put Matlock and Tibbs on the same screen at the same time!? You’re clearly playing chess not checkers here. 😂🤣

I’m kind of glad the top two are from Lestat and Louis this Labor Day weekend. Stay out of it, wall crawler. But this is the very weekend that I always expected with top Black Panther, was there ever any doubt that it would be the top movie? For the weekend on me. It may be for the year! Certainly is for the year so far. O and look, 7 million, meaning it has not reached the weekend where it makes less than 1 million yet. This is weekend 15 folks. This movie may go on reaching let’s say 22 weekends. And that’s with it streaming already. Of course there aren’t many movies in theaters so that helps the phenomenon keep phenomenoning

@TheWalkingCuban - Nice Interview with the Vampire reference, i love that movie! That came out in 1994 and the two stars then are the biggest action stars in movies today, that's just insane.

@WarMonkey - right, real movie stars, and each has controversies in their past which gives me hope for Will smith, honestly it waa Cruise and smith while Pitt kept flying but under the radar for sure. Only directed for a lil minute I think. I met him and Angelina at my dads Cuban restaurant December of 07 when they lived in New Orleans, they ride their motorcycles to the MS gulf coast abs stopped at our joint, it was super cool

@WarMonkey - yeah and guess what, right after that, she played a Cuban in the movie A Mighty Heart, in which she cooked Picadillo, a ground beef plate, which is what she ordered at the restaurant! Pitt was in Benjamin button around that time

It always cracks me up to see Brian Robbin's name as the CEO of Paramount Pictures, mainly because I remember him as the greaser dude on Head of the Class, lol
