Sony Hires Spiderman 5 and 6 Writer

Sony hires James Vanderbilt to pen Spidey 5 and Spidey 6, says Variety.

"As Sony Pictures Entertainment preps a fourth installment of "Spider-Man" to begin production early next year, the studio has quietly engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to pen "Spider-Man 5" and "Spider-Man 6."

Vanderbilt was the first writer on "Spider-Man 4." Director Sam Raimi brought on "Rabbit Hole" playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to rewrite him, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script. The studio is enthusiastic about where it stands as the picture begins prepping for an early 2010 production start for a May 2011 release.

Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but execs at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline. That's what was originally discussed when Vanderbilt signed on to write "Spider-Man 4," but the idea of shooting a fourth and fifth film back to back with the original cast was scrapped.

Sources said it was unclear whether Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and Kirsten Dunst will be back. If they aren't, Vanderbilt's script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot. After committing to his fourth "Spider-Man" film, Raimi signed on to direct a new franchise based on the massively multi-player role-playing online computer game "World of Warcraft" for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Maguire and Dunst were locked into the first three pictures and made a new deal for "Spider-Man 4." It's unclear how long they want to continue with the series.

Then again, Raimi was initially doubtful for "Spider-Man 4" because he expected to direct "The Hobbit," but returned after Guillermo del Toro got the job.

Why is Vanderbilt writing when so many variables are undecided?

The most important thing is for Sony to prime the "Spider-Man" pump more frequently. The lapse between films has grown with each blockbuster. The second film came only two years after the first, but it took three years for a third installment, and four years will have passed when "Spider-Man 4" opens in summer 2011.

Sony Pictures toppers Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton may well have a new franchise following last weekend's strong opening of "District 9." And after "Angels and Demons" grossed some $500 million worldwide, they will certainly move forward and extend the "Da Vinci Code" franchise with an adaptation of Dan Brown's fall publishing release, "The Lost Symbol." But "Spider-Man" remains the studio's most important film franchise, and Sony doesn't want to wait half a decade for the next outing.

While the "Spider-Man" movie business is booming, Sony has widened its footprint on the franchise and become one of the investors in the Broadway musical version of the webslinger. The "Spider-Man, Turn off the Dark" tuner recently experienced a funding hiccup on the way to a planned March premiere.

Although there's been speculation that the show, which will cost upward of $35 million to produce, may not get off the ground. The project is too important to the "Spider-Man" partners to be tabled, sources said. The musical has "The Lion King" director Julie Taymor and songs by U2's Bono and the Edge.

Vanderbilt's most recent script credits are the Sylvain White-directed "The Losers" for Warner Bros. and David Fincher's "Zodiac."

He's repped by WME and Fuse Entertainment."

Pretty cool news, at least it's some progress.

I hope for the next three movies we can see more of the wise cracking Spiderman, not to mention a less dorky Parker. Weve had 3 movies of character development, so theres no excuse. Lets pray Maguire can actually pull it off.

Oh god, I just realised that James Vanderbilt was behind a re-write on Wolverine. I hope he wasnt the one who came up with....ADAMANTIUM BULLETS! I know what kind of ammo Kraven is gonna have in Spidey 4! lol But seriously I hope James was behind the few intelligent plot points in Wolverine and not the amazing disappearing and appearing Gambit, Barakapool, Emma Frost not being psychic and the adamant...oh dont make me say it again! I hope the script is good because it is gonna take an entire epic trilogy creating the Sinister Six to redeem Spider-Man 3!

Another article about the same subject was uploaded by EdGross and put onto the main page first and your pics was on that one but it seems are our dear InTylerWeTrust had posted his article before EdGross. The moderators realised they had put the wrong article on the main page and put up this one instead. Unfortunately they also deleted EdGross's article with all your pics!

ah well, ill say what i said on the other article...Spider-Man 6 = SINISTER SIX!!!

InTylerWeTrust - 8/17/2009, 2:34 PM
But with Doc Ock dead and Sandman a wussy misunderstood man, I don't see it happening. Ock is the clincher of the S6, without him, it won't be nearly as good.

InTylerWeTrust82-All you need is for Mysterio to use robots and illusions as stand-ins for those who cant be present to make the Sinister Six whole! Not too hard to pull off!

InTylerWeTrust - 8/17/2009, 2:47 PM
I don't like that idea, it would seem too forced in IMO.

You never know what's going to happen till it happens.

But I will say this: I don't like the time frame.
2011 is starting to get a little crowded.
I definitely don't want it to steal the thunder of other movies that I care more about like Captain America.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/17/2009, 3:00 PM
TYLER: just imagine - at the end of Spider-Man 2 when the lights on Ock tentacles go out we then get a flashback showing that they suddenly came back on pulling him out of the water and resussitate him..! As easy and that and Ock is back! Snadman was always going from hero to villain in the comics so he could easily tur, bring Osborn back - theres 3 - then add in either Kraven, Lizard, Scorpion or Electro and you have six! :)
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/17/2009, 3:00 PM
WHY teabag WHY!?! ;)
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 8/17/2009, 3:10 PM
But if the lights came back on, then Otto is still good though, he went back to being good, and it would be rehashing how he turned from good to bad, from bad to good, and now good to bad again. A bit boring IMO.

With Sandman, they pretty much beat it over our heads at the end of SM3 that he was misunderstood and that he was a good guy. It would basically ruin the whole ending of SM3 if he would turn back to bad.

My ideal S6 line up:

1. Doc Ock

2. Electro

3. Sandman/Chameleon

4. Kraven

5. Scorpion

6. Mysterio

Ock is the most important member of the Sinister 6. It would be stupid without Ock IMO. I don't like Vulture at all, but Chameleon is cool.

Why does Raimi have to either kill off the villains or sh*t all over their characters but let them live? The only reason Sandman was left alive was because he's Raimi and Maguire's favorite villain.
