Sony Pictures' Universe Of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) No More; Long Live "Sony's Spider-Man Universe"

During Sony Pictures' CinemaCon presentation last night, it appears Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters received a rebrand as "Sony's Spider-Man Universe." Does that name have an extra meaning?

In terms of comic book franchises on the big screen, we have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Extended Universe (which is only a semi-official name), and Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters. "SPUMC" always seemed like something of a mouthful, and very much a corporate title as opposed to one fans could really get behind.

Well, during Sony Pictures' CinemaCon presentation last night, Screen Rant reveals that the studio have named their slate of Spider-Man-adjacent movies, "Sony's Spider-Man Universe."

With the wall-crawler's name up there in lights, you have to believe that he's about to start factoring into these spinoff movies. Remember, a big part of that renegotiated deal with Disney/Marvel Studios was to open the door to Spider-Man being part of the MCU and SPUMC SSU (SSMU?), and there have already been rumblings that the hero will factor into that Kraven the Hunter movie.

A meeting with Venom also has to be somewhere on the cards after Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage are released. Despite the mixed feelings some fans have about that Tom Hardy-led franchise, there's no denying it would be amazing to see the two characters once again sharing the big screen together.

For now, we know that Morbius, Madame Web, and Silk are among the projects coming to this SSU franchise.

As for Spider-Man, it feels a lot like his next movie is going to open the door to some very exciting possibilities, which may include the versions of Peter Parker played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

@The1st - Stupid facts:

In the Swedish original Pippi Longstocking series, there was an entire episode called "Pippi find a spunk" and Pippi is looking for spunk the whole episode.

Back then, it was a made up word from her/the writer, and had no meaning in Swedish. :)

@dragon316 - since we’re merging universes, what if Tom Hardy’s Venom symbiote combines with Topher Grace’s Venom and that’s how he gets the white spider in his chest?

Does that mean Spider-man will really leave the MCU to join the Sonyverse at the end of No Way Home ? I was half-joking with all those One More Day references in the trailer.

@Amuro - he still has a team-up after NWH

@OptimusCrime - He has two more movies he can appear in outside of No Way Home, right?

I imagine those would be something to do with Secret Wars. He's stuck in Sony's universe, but appears one or more times in Secret Wars and maybe something else multiverse related.

@CorndogBurglar - As far as i remember, it said 1 solo and a teamup. But i Hope i remember it wrong and it is what you said.

@Amuro - he has at least one more team up left. I'm guessing the spell creates a pocket dimension where Peter and his supporting cast go, and it's revealed that's the ssu.

I saw someone comment yesterday saying No Way Home had a deeper meaning.

Basically, at the end of this movie the MCU Peter Parker gets sent back to the Sony-Verse and trapped there. Hence, No Way Home.

I had a question about that:

1. Sony and Marvel have more movies in their deal. 1 solo film (which is No Way Home) and 2 films that Spidey can be included in. Something along the lines of Civil War, or Infinity War. So why would they trap him in the Sony-Verse now?

But with the multiverse broken, it leaves the door open for Spidey to appear in their crossover movies, like Secret Wars, and something else. That would fill the other 2 films in their deal without ever really permanently bringing Spidey back to the MCU.
