A controversial line many consider to be a homophobic insult has been cut from a UK television broadcast of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, which aired over the weekend on ITV 2.

As Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) prepares to face-off against Bonesaw McGraw (the late Macho Man Randy Savage) in a wrestling match, he sticks to the side of the cage in an effort to evade his furious opponent. In the original version, Parker says, "that's a cute outfit... did your husband give it to you?"

However, Twitter user Paper Plane noticed that the line had been censored while watching the movie, and shared the following video clip.

It's easy to see why the line would be seen as problematic today, but this sort of thing was prevalent in movies - even supposed family-friendly fare - back in the late '90s/early noughties. This particular scene has gained a significant amount of notoriety over the years, though some have argued that Parker is simply trying to throw Bonesaw off his game, and don't see any real malicious intent behind it.

Even so, it's difficult to defend the line by today's standards, and there's no way an exchange like this would appear in any modern-day superhero movie!

As far as we know, this is the first time the line has been removed from any version of Spider-Man, and can still be heard in the most recent home media release of the film.
