It's now been more than two decades since Spider-Man was released in theaters and a resurfaced costume test video revisits the web-slinger's big screen debut.
We see a number of the comic book adaptation's leads wearing a variety of costumes here, including Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Willem Dafoe. Most interesting, of course, is seeing Maguire decked out in his homemade Spider-Man suit and the final costume which has since become iconic.
Visual effects were vastly different when Spider-Man was made and, watching the movie now, it's easy to see when the practical version of the hero is swapped for his VFX doppelganger.
It's fascinating to see Maguire testing out how much manoeuvrability he has in the suit, particularly as Tom Holland is more often than not decked out in a motion-capture onesie on the set of Marvel Studios' Spider-Man and Avengers movies.
Both Maguire and Dafoe reprised their respective roles in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Reflecting on the project being pitched to him, the Peter Parker actor said, "In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies and what it meant, I think, to Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige] was apparent."
"And to me, when artists or, you know, people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that, I don’t know, I just wanted to join that. And I’m a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing, but yes, I was also going, 'Well, what are we going to do? And that was a bit mysterious.'"
Rumours continue to swirl that Maguire will suit up yet again for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Spider-Man was directed by Sam Raimi from a screenplay by David Koepp and is the first instalment in the filmmaker's trilogy. Exploring the wall-crawler's origin story, the movie saw the hero battle the Green Goblin, with "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" used as a basis for that clash.
The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning $825 million worldwide. Delivering groundbreaking visual effects and a bold new approach to superheroes which changed the genre forever, Spider-Man remains a beloved classic.
