Kirsten Dunst Isn't Sure The World Needs Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 4- "I Don’t Think We Need That"

While rumors persist that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are set to return for a Marvel Studio's produced Spider-Man 4, actress Kirsten Dunst doesn't seem sure that's a good idea.

Will Tobey Maguire ever return for a solo Spider-Man movie that picks up from where Spider-Man 3 left off?

The usual rumor mongers would sure like you to believe that's in the works but one of the film's stars isn't sure that's what the world needs right now.

Speaking to IndieWire to promote her upcoming release, Civil War, actress Kristen Dunst gave a measured reply when asked about returning to play Mary Jane Watson in another Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man movie.

"I don’t think we need that. I don’t know," said Dunst.

"It was so long ago. I just don’t know how they would, what the story would be. I don’t know. It seems like … I don’t know! It would really depend on the script, and also, I don’t know, you’re really putting yourself out there in a way that … let’s maybe leave things when they were good. You know what I mean?"

Recently, Dunst revealed that the reason she didn't appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, was because she wasn't asked to reprise her role. However, she would have, if asked.

The other major rumor running rampant at the moment is that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man will appear in Avengers 5 and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. If a full-fledged sequel to Spider-Man 3 isn't in the cards, perhaps Dunst can cameo alongside Maguire?

As for why Dunst is suddenly popping up all over the internet, discussing a role she last played 17 years ago, it's because she stars in Alex Garland's Civil War, which opens in theaters today. The movie is garnering rave reviews and might be a serious awards contender this fall.

On her upcoming role, Dunst stated, "This movie feels like a fable to me — like a cautionary fable of what happens when people don’t communicate with each other. When nobody listens to each other, when you silence journalists, when we lose a shared truth."

Civil War currently has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 85 reviews, with an average score of 7.8 out of 10. According to boxofficepro.com, the film is tracking for a domestic opening in the range of $20-$30 million and has a chance to upset Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as the #1 film in America this weekend.

Do you want to see Spider-Man 4 happen with Raimi at the helm or a cameo from Dunst's Mary Jane in Secret Wars? Let us know in the comment section below.

@JobinJ - is it just me, or does anyone else think her most convincing performance was Interview With A Vampire? To me as she grew up she looked to become more bored with.... Life lol 😂 even that mini smile she's cracking in that image, it looks like it hurts her, like she's experiencing pain to smirk. I think she might be allergic to emotion.

Well actually, she was pretty good in Jumanji, to be fair.

@TheVandalore - In a thread where the topic is that she's gotten hotter in age, you're saying her peak was when she was 8?

Ya. It's just you, man.

TheVandalore - 4/12/2024, 10:39 AM
@Sembias - reading comprehension is important. I never mentioned her being hot. You're projecting. I was talking about her acting.

That's a super weird stretch you are attempting to make lol your intentions and thought process is disturbingly obvious.

Twisting words is not an art you excel at lol

@Sembias - it's honestly terrifying you can engage with the words I wrote about her becoming a boring actor as she grew up, and some how make that “We're talking about her be sexy, you think she sexy as kid... You make weirdo"

You kids are very smart...

Said it before but if they had to do it and bring back the old cast the best thing for sony to do is launch Spidergirl/Mayday. Let Sony work with that as a franchise instead of the all the villian reject spin offs.

IronSpider101 - 4/12/2024, 4:44 PM
@UniqNo - Honestly, I think the reject spin-offs are just so they can hold onto the rights. They need a Spider-Man movie in production every like, 3 years or something? I think they realize at this point that if they make a crappy Spider-Man movie they're liable to sink the franchise, but nobody cares if they're crapping out bad Morbius/Madame Webb movies because those characters are relatively minor.

Correct, stop pandering to the Nostalgia Crowd, create new, exciting things
Tankapotamus

@KaptainKhaos - What the heck are you talking about? What makes something "new and exciting"? An original story based off of the Back in Black storyline would be AMAZING! It's never been done in animation and they've never used a comic as a story board, so why not? Something being new, doesn't make it good or exciting. A sequel can be original and better the the first movie.

But it sure would be nice. There's so much time passed since the last one, they could make it be about Peter passing the mantle to their daughter Mayday. Could even use part of that original Spider-Man 4 script
Matchesz
Matchesz - 4/12/2024, 8:54 AM
@bkmeijer1 - yup exactly. I Iwould have kirsten and tobey with a beard as a retiring spidey and their daughter Mayday. A No Way Home part 1/2 could’ve explored that more idk if we need a whole movie but still would’ve been better than madame webb
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/12/2024, 9:11 AM
@Matchesz - think they could've even made that a three parter of sorts with Garfield's Spider-Man starring in one too.

Somy wants another Spider-Verse with the three of them together, but I think there's still enough momentum to continue each of their stories individually.

I don't understand what she means by "needs". It's a movie; it's not a need (we have plenty of movies already).

How can any movie be a "need"? What the F is she talking about?
HermanM
HermanM - 4/12/2024, 9:06 AM
She's not wrong, but we really don't NEED any movie. It's all just entertainment.

That said, the first Raimi Spider-Man movie is the greatest superhero movie ever made to date.

@HermanM - I still remember watching it at the theaters on a Sunday when it opened that weekend. Blew my friggin mind, and then the sequel just did it again but better.

For sure one of the greats, especially from one of my favorite directors who is a big inspiration, Sam Raimi.

She has a point. We don't NEED it. But also, I think she's also thinking from her characters perspective, and there are definitely things you can do with MJ, but I don't know if a Spider-Man 4 actually NEEDS much from MJ.

IF...if Spider-Man 4 ever happened, it would need to be a finale to that universe, hopefully a happy ending. And you don't really need MJ to be a dramatic anything in that script other than Peters partner and anchor of love on his last mission or adventure as Spider-Man.
Timerider
Timerider - 4/12/2024, 9:55 AM
@TheVandalore - I agree, I’d like to see Toby in Spider-man 4 be his last film, closing that chapter as Spider-man, but creating a new one at the same time. I think MJ should die 30 minutes into the movie, and it’s Spidey’s fault for not getting there on time. Meanwhile, his daughter is starting to show her abilities. He must let go of the guilt and and help his daughter navigate as the new Spider-girl. She does have her first villain that she must face at the end.

It could be set before, during or after the No Way Home portal scene.
Timerider
Timerider - 4/12/2024, 10:09 AM
@Timerider - when MJ dies, it mirrors how Aunt May felt when Uncle Ben died. He’s put in her shoes from her perspective, he’s devastated. It becomes full circle for Peter, it will take his daughter to bring him back. He must teach his daughter what he learned as the wall crawler to defeat her enemy. It would be a long movie, like 2:20+

we dont need ANYTHING outta of Hollywood. entertainment is a luxury not a necessity. so if we want to really get real. otherwise no we dont NEED it but sure would be fun and awesome to enjoy another one while McGuire is still willing and physically able.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 4/12/2024, 9:32 AM
Need is a strong word and they technically had a satisfying wrap up in 3 that didn't have any stingers for what's next (vs the Harry set up in 1 and 2 that was concluded in 3)... but it would sell and the demand is still kind of there, somewhat reinvigorated by No Way Home
JustAWaffle
JustAWaffle - 4/12/2024, 9:42 AM
It would be pretty stupid for them not to. It’s a hot point of bringing old stuff back. And if they put in the work to do it well then it would be like printing money.

So get ready, Kirsten. You’ve got a job to do.

She says we don't need it but if it happened she'd be in it taking that pay cheque.
