Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is available to watch on Digital, Sony Pictures has released a spoiler-filled new trailer focusing on Sadie Sink's Jean Grey.
Rumors that the Stranger Things star had joined the cast as the powerful mutant telepath had been circulating for a while before the movie's release, though Sony/Marvel did an admirable job of keeping the reveal under wraps for as long as possible.
Jean is introduced as an antagonist in Brand New Day, but it's later revealed that she is on a mission to rescue/avenge her sister, Sara, who (supposedly) died while being experimented on by Damage Control.
According to MTTSH, Sara is actually alive and will return in a future MCU movie (likely X-Men).
"She’s such an iconic figure in X-Men and in comics, and I’m very excited to bring my iteration of her to life," Sink said in a post-release interview. "She’s very flawed. You’re meeting her at a strange point, because I don’t think she is someone who wants to harm, but she herself has been harmed, so that’s all she knows."
"So, giving her that backstory and a motive behind her actions is really powerful. They told me that I was the villain, but that you’re not actually the villain, which is how I played her. I don’t really want to lean into, like, this bad guy aura. Because in her brain it’s totally justified. Which I mean, I agree. I think it is."
Spider-Man 5 has not been officially announced, but it's surely only a matter of time. Though it might take a while, director Destin Daniel Cretton will most likely return to helm after recently signing a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures.
Following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins a brand new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult and living alone after erasing himself and the memories of him from those he loves. In a New York that no longer knows his name, he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to protecting his city as Spider-Man full-time.
But as the demands on him grow, he is put under increasing pressure. This triggers an unexpected physical change that threatens his existence, while a strange wave of crime emerges - and gives rise to one of the most dangerous threats he has ever faced.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.
