Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Sony CEO Tom Rothman Reveals Secret To Movie's $2.4 Billion Success

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become one of the biggest movies in history, and Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman has now shared what he believes is the secret behind the movie's unprecedented success.

It was clear that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would be a box office hit before it arrived in theaters on July 31. However, no one anticipated it would become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time.

With $2.4 billion at the worldwide box office, the Spider-Man: No Way Home sequel sits behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. In North America, the blockbuster has become only the second title ever to surpass $900 million and, by the end of its run, it will beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens to be crowned the biggest U.S. movie in history.

Now, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has weighed in on Spider-Man: Brand New Day's unprecedented level of success.

"For a result like that to happen, everything has to work perfectly," he told Variety at the Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence today. Praising the "incredibly talented" team that's worked on the franchise, Rothman also singled out Marvel Studios and Tom Holland, who "has been our partner in this for over a decade now."

He added that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is "not so much a superhero film, but a 'super-person' film. The reason that movie has resonated all around the world is that it’s about a lonely guy. It’s like, yeah, it’s about friendship. It’s very human. It’s very emotional. It’s got plenty of whiz-bang, but that’s not what the secret is. The secret is it’s a relatable story that almost everybody has related to."

While some fans have been critical about the decision to pit Peter Parker against the X-Men franchise's Jean Grey. However, even with classic villains like The Scorpion and Tombstone given minor roles, the story has resonated with audiences in a big way. What that means for Spider-Man 5 promises to be very interesting.

During the event, Rothman also acknowledged one of Sony's biggest misfires this year. The studio let Curry Barker's Obsession slip from its fingers after being outbid by Universal's Focus Features by just "a couple million dollars."

Focus reportedly paid $14 million for the movie, which has grossed nearly $510 million worldwide. Joking that he was "outraged," Rothman said, "I would like to have that moment back. I congratulate the worthy opposition."

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter that he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

The real secret is putting Hulks return in the film, and The Punisher. Need to watch this again ASAP.

It also benefitted from timing - not a lot of competition at the box office for a long stretch.

“not so much a superhero film, but a 'super-person' film“

Stahp….
Why are studio heads like this? I get they want to stretch their vocabulary to create contrast, but it comes off as idiotic.

It was a good movie that had a decent creative team around it. Just say they found people who care about a fidelity to the character, and have a competency in the art, and go from there.

It was successful because the previous movie released following the lockdowns, it's tied to a core memory for a lot of the audience of their first family film in cinemas after a two year gap. No Way Home also flooded people with nostalgia and set-up the idea of returning to the core aspects of Spider-man that everyone wanted to see. So when they see a new Spider-man film advertised and it looks visually good they remember the nostalgia bomb from the previous movie and decide to watch it.

In terms of re-watching, there's nothing else on and it looks visually good with action scenes, that's really about it. Once that fades people will start to see the story is an absolute mess and it'll result in this film being viewed as worse and worse. TASM2 is similar in that regard, both films have amazing visuals and awesome looking action sequences but the plot is a disaster and it'll be considered the worst Spider-man movies along with that film.

@Scarilian - Pretty much.
I actually really liked the cameo-filled montage in the beginning, but the fact that they used the clips in the trailers to hype up such minimal parts was frustrating. Admittedly sometimes bait-and-switches like that are okay by me (I was surprisingly cool with the Mandarin twist in IM3 though I think that boils down to being only a casual fan of Iron Man versus a big Spidey fan) but for some reason I found it despicable that Sony would play up those things in promotional material like they were going to have more of a presence in the film. I'm glad I never got my hopes up and remained cautious/skeptical.

Another thing to consider is that the market isn't saturated with Spider-Man content, so when an actual live-action movie comes out, it's an event. The longer studios wait between releases, the more likely they are to succeed economically. They would be smart to wait no less than 4 years before releasing Spider-Man 5 if they want to see similar results again.

We know the secret to making a successful movie. Also we didn't think Obsession was worth spending $15M.

Like anyone from SONY knows how to make a good superhero movie on their own. It was successful because MARVEL did all the work.

Had he simply stated, "We didn't listen to the 🌈 b🐩ches." He would've had my full respect.

This reads like some generic 🐃💩. Nonetheless, I am happy with the success of Spider-Man! 😬
