Spider-Noir Star Nicolas Cage Responds To Cancellation As Show Picks Up 5 Primetime Emmy Awards

Over the weekend, the news broke that Amazon Prime Video has decided not to move forward with a second season of Spider-Noir, and star Nicolas Cage has now shared his response.

"For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” Cage said in a statement to Deadline, adding, “Onwards, upwards, inwards.”

Spider-Noir told a mostly self-contained story over 8 episodes. While there were enough unresolved threads to develop another season if the show had been renewed, it's understandable that Cage wouldn't be overly disappointed that the series will not continue.

Despite this development, Deadline reports that the Amazon-Sony TV collaboration will continue. "The two sides are carrying on with development of multiple projects, with one of them said to be nearing a series order."

The show, which starred Cage as Ben Reilly, an aging PI in an alternate 1930s New York who must confront his former life as the city’s only superhero, was very popular with critics (92% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% audience score) and was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards, the most for any Prime Video show this year.

Last night, Spider-Noir won 5 of those Emmy Awards for: Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour), Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series, Outstanding Stunt Coordination, Outstanding Main Title Design, Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode.

What do you make of Cage's response? Were you looking forward to more Spider-Noir? Let us know in the comments.

Oren Uziel served as writer and executive producer on the show, with Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and former Sony boss Amy Pascal also on board as executive producers.

Uziel is known for penning romantic actioner The Lost City, along with the likes of 22 Jump Street, Mortal Kombat, and The Cloverfield Paradox. He also has writing credits on John Wick: Chapter 4 and the upcoming Borderlands video game adaptation.

Cage didn't reprise the role of Noir for the recent Across the Spider-Verse animated sequel, but is expected to return for the final film in the animated trilogy, Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Noir's cast also includes Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Karen Rodriguez (The Hunting Wives), and Abraham Popoola (Atlas), with guest stars Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster.

I loved this quirky show but I’m done with a single season. At least we got a complete story

On The Subject Of (Seemingly) Premature Cancellations: 🤔

Nick Cage: "For me, one season is perfect... Onwards, upwards, inwards.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen: “When you look at the history of those projects and when you put them all together, there’s no way around it. It does not look good. That’s what it looks like,”

@SuperiorHeckler - They asked Yahya Abdul-Mateen about the optics of the cancelation on top on Blade's, which is different

@TemporarilyHere - don't forget season 2 of Secret Invasion, Ms Marvel, Moon Knight, a Nova movie, Inhumans movie, New Warriors, Helstrom and the Tick

@Slotherin -

The 2nd seasons of Secret Invasion and Ms Marvel do fit the narrative, the rest eh... not so much.

Plus, I'm still foolishly hopign that Moon Knight S2 is not outright cancelled but rather delayed for longer than it should have, or at the very least remade into part of a Midnight Sons adaptation.

@Slotherin - to be fair , A Nova movie is still in development.

@TemporarilyHere - lol

The inclusion of Spider Noir aside , the optics of this are problematic unfortunately even if the intention behind the cancellations isn’t what we think.

@TemporarilyHere - the point was actually to critique or challenge that narrative as there have been tons of projects that were cancelled, not greenlit for another season or repurposed and it's not just black characters. It's easy to cherry pick the ones that are and line them up while ignoring others because they don't fit the narrative.

@Slotherin -

No worries, I get you, but still the vast majority is something to note the pattern of, no? Plus, the inclusion of Noir if anything establishes it as more of a joke than any kind of serious accusation.

@TemporarilyHere - It's only really a pattern if they weren't cancelling other stuff too.
But yeah, touché, that Noir one should have connected. Internet hasn't been giving me much faith in humanity lately lol
Allow me to apologize for that much

Congrats to the team of Spider-Noir on winning the various awards that they did!!.

Also while I would liked a second season , I don’t think it needed one since it pretty much told a complete story…

The only real loose threads I feel was what is Ben’s real name since they said he changed it after WW1 , it’s implied it was Peter but I don’t think it’s necessary to reveal that while the other one was if Dirk was still alive or not which one could take as latter now so that’s fine.

Anyway , I thought Spider-Noir was quite good so hopefully the next SUMC tv project is as strong if not better!!.
