10 Actresses Perfect To Play The Girl Of Steel In Warner Bros.' Planned SUPERGIRL Movie
With Warner Bros. moving forward on a Supergirl movie, we take a look at ten actresses who would arguably be an ideal choice to take on the role of the Girl of Steel. Hit the jump to check them out...
Earlier today, we learned that a Supergirl movie is in the works at Warner Bros. That's not the news most DC Comics fans were hoping for as it's about damn time that Henry Cavill's Superman is given another chance to shine in a solo adventure but the Girl of Steel is equally deserving of the big screen treatment. While it's still early days, fans are already wondering who could take on the iconic role.
So, with that in mind, we're now taking a look at ten actresses - of different ages from a variety of backgrounds - who we believe would be a great choice to bring Kara Danvers back totheaters across the globe. We're pretty confident that you'll have something to say about all of these, so to take a look, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button down below for the entire list of names.
Vanessa Kirby
Vanessa Kirby had a relatively minor role in Mission: Impossible - Fallout but what we saw of her there was excellent and it's clear that the English actress has a bright future in Hollywood. She's been rumoured for a role in Birds of Prey as Black Canary so if that doesn't work out, she's on their radar.
I could easily imagine her suiting up as Supergirl and I think she'd bring a very different feel to the character than what we've seen in the past, making the Girl of Steel a little more confident and giving her an edge. After all, that would be more interesting to watch than her "Aw, shucks" persona, right?
Angourie Rice
Angourie Rice had only a very minor role in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Betty Brant and while it's possible that could be expanded on somewhere down the line, something tells me that the talented star of The Nice Guys would be better off making the leap to the DCEU to play the Girl of Steel.
She's young enough to play a Supergirl who has only just gained her powers and there's a very good chance that Warner Bros. will look to crack into the teen market the same way Marvel has with the wall-crawler by putting the spotlight on a teenager/woman in her early 20s rather than an adult.
Virginia Gardner
Virginia Gardner stole the show in Marvel's Runaways and while a second season is currently in the works, there's surely nothing to stop her making the leap to the DC Extended Universe by playing a character for them on the big screen. Supergirl is as good a choice as any and she'd be a great fit.
She has the look down and is definitely in the right age range to play a Girl of Steel who is only just now discovering her powers. Yes, it's a little too similar to what we've seen from her in the Marvel TV show but give it a few years and no one would even think about that she dons Supergirl's iconic suit.
Francia Raisa
If you know anything about Selena Gomez, you'll probably recognise Francia Raisa's name because she was all over the place in 2017 for donating a kidney to the singer. However, she has plenty of her own stuff going on in 2018 unrelated to Gomez because she stars in Freeform's Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish.
She's the right age for the Girl of Steel and unless I'm mistaken, there aren't any rules in place stating that the character must be white and have blonde hair! Raisa would be a great diverse pick for this iconic DC Comics superhero, and more importantly, she's also incredibly talented and a solid actress.
Kathryn Newton
Kathryn Newton initially made a name for herself by starring in Supernatural but 2018 is going to be a huge year for her. In 2017, she delivered some stellar performances in movies like Lady Bird and Big Little Lies and can next be seen in PBS' Little Women along with Ben is Back and Detective Pikachu.
Simply put, the actress has to be on the studio's radar for something and Supergirl is as good a choice as any. She has the right look, is definitely a suitable age to play the Girl of Steel, and is extremely talented. She's also not a big enough name that there will be too much pressure on her performance.
Kim Matula
Kim Matula may not be someone you instantly recognise but the UnReal alum has an exciting 2018 ahead as she'll star alongside Dwayne Johnson and Lena Headey in wrestling drama/comedy Fighting with My Family. She's also the lead in FOX's LA To Vegas but what makes her a good fit for Supergirl?
Well, she's definitely someone whose star is on the rise and she has that all-American look which would be perfect for Kara Danvers. I find it hard to imagine anyone complaining if she were cast and Matula definitely feels like someone who Warner Bros. could build a successful franchise around.
Melissa Benoist
This is highly unlikely but I still think it's worth stopping to acknowledge the impressive work Melissa Benoist has down in The CW's Supergirl. Unfortunately, there's no way Warner Bros. is going to have her make the leap from the small screen to the big one but they should at least consider it (really).
After all, the studio faced backlash for choosing Ezra Miller over Grant Gustin and Benoist has proved herself on a number of occasions of being more than capable of doing some great work with this character. Alas, we'll have to be content with seeing her play the Girl of Steel on TV for the time being.
Natalie Dormer
Fans have been suggesting that Natalie Dormer take on a superhero role ever since she made a blink and you'll miss it appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger and Game of Thrones proved that she has the acting chops to go far. So, why not let her see what she can do with the Girl of Steel?
She would be a slightly older (and thereby experienced) Supergirl but with it clear that it's now possible this movie could take place in a world not connected to the DCEU, there's a very good chance we could spend time with a Kara Danvers who has been on Earth for a long time. Time will tell, I guess!
Auli'i Cravalho
The young Auli'i Cravalho rose to prominence when she won the lead role in Disney's Moana and her star has been on the rise ever since. This year, she's moved into the live-action realm with a role in NBC's Rise and she'll return to the role that made her famous in Wreck-It Ralph 2 a little later this year.
As I've mentioned, there's absolutely no rule in place that says Supergirl must be white and blonde and I definitely think Cravalho has the potential to shine on screen in a role like this. She is only 17 as of right now but by the time Warner Bros. starts shooting this one, she'll arguably be the perfect age.
Jennifer Lawrence
Oh man, how much would this p*** off some people? In recent years, Jennifer Lawrence's quirky personality (and the fact she's become the focal point of the X-Men franchise as Mystique) has resulted in fanboys turning on the actress. However, there's no way we can ignore how talented she is.
Is she the best possible choice for Supergirl on this list? Not necessarily but Warner Bros. has made some unconventional casting decisions recently, including Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker! As a result, it's perfectly feasible that they'll try to find an A-List star and Lawrence could fit the bill in that respect.
